Week 5 Fantasy Football RB Rankings (Top 39)

Listen to the episode ↗

Josh and Hayden run through their full Week 5 running back rankings (1-39), highlighting Jameer Gibbs and Bijan Robinson as a clear top tier, then digging into messy backfield committees (Bears, Giants, Commanders, Saints, Broncos) and injury-driven waiver targets like Trevion Henderson and Tyler Algier. They close with speculative trade fantasy booking Saquon Barkley away from a tanking Eagles team.

This episode is the hosts' full week five running back rankings, running all 39 fantasy-relevant backs from locks to handcuffs. The driving theme is that touchdown-or-bust committee backfields (Chicago, New York Giants, New Orleans) are dragging down usage darlings while backup-turned-starter situations in Denver, Cleveland, and Green Bay are producing must-starts almost by default.

The arguments

Jahmyr Gibbs and Bijan Robinson are the only true S-tier plays this week, with Jonathan Taylor a clear step below them. Josh and Hayden point to Detroit's near-30-point projected total against Arizona and Gibbs' RB14 finish over his last three-four weeks as reasons he's an obvious RB1. Robinson gets similar treatment against Baltimore given his recent 25-plus-point stretch and Atlanta's hot run game under new OL coach Dave Callahan. Hayden flags that Taylor's 4.1 yards-per-carry is a career low tied to Indianapolis' now-mediocre offensive line, not Taylor himself, which is why both hosts still love him but won't put him in the very top tier.

Kyren Williams has become a receiving weapon, not just a between-the-tackles grinder, and that's what's sustaining his ceiling. Hayden notes the Rams are deliberately using Williams on choice routes and angle routes out of the slot, which delivered 10 receptions last week and RB6/RB9 usage. Josh adds that Buffalo's top corner being out and a beatable linebacker/secondary group make this a plus matchup even if star rookie DT Deone Walker makes the interior tougher.

The Broncos backfield is a must-roster situation entirely contingent on Ramondre Stevenson's health, and RJ Harvey has been a genuine letdown. Hayden says Trevon Henderson has been the RB1 overall in his three games without Stevenson (22.7 half-PPR points per game on RB5 usage), and with Stevenson not practicing Wednesday and the only other option being Corey Kiner, Henderson should "shoot up rankings" if Stevenson sits. Separately, both hosts are stunned by how bad Harvey has looked as the lead back even with 10 catches in a game, with Josh noting Dobbins' early-down snap share is dropping as a possible signal Harvey could take over goal-line work.

DeAndre Swift and Kyle Monangai are both legitimate flex/RB2 plays, but Monangai's stock is trending up after Ben Johnson's pointed comments. Josh flags that Johnson called Swift's fumble "egregious" and that Swift didn't touch the ball again after it; Hayden counters that usage is still basically 50-50 and either back is capable of an RB1 finish given Chicago's plus matchup with Green Bay (second-most fantasy points allowed to backs). Both speculate Monangai could start claiming more goal-line work specifically because of his bulldozer running style near the end zone.

Chase Brown and Javonte Williams are both buy-low plays this week because of softened matchups. Hayden calls Brown a buy-low given he's faced four of the toughest run defenses in football so far and now gets a Miami defense that isn't nearly as stout, compounded by Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins' injury questions opening up volume. On Williams, both hosts acknowledge 44% of his fantasy points come from touchdowns, but love the Cowboys' massive home-favorite spot against a Tampa Bay defense that hasn't faced a real starting running back all year.

The Eagles' offensive line is collapsing in real time, and that's wrecking Will Shipley's outlook while raising real trade speculation around Saquon Barkley. Josh walks through Landon Dickerson's IR stint, Lane Johnson's retirement, and the trade of Cam Jurgens to Baltimore for a 2028 second-rounder as evidence Philadelphia is in reset mode, calling Shipley's Thursday matchup against Jacksonville's front "not the time" for this inexperience. Josh floats Barkley trade fits (Vikings, Seahawks, Broncos) as pure speculation, which Hayden agrees would be a "huge win" compared to Barkley's current situation.

Bucky Irving should be sold now because Sean Tucker is vulturing his short-yardage and goal-line work. Hayden details a sequence where Tucker, not Irving, got every short-yardage and goal-line snap last week despite Irving being on the field just before, calling it intentional usage rather than a one-off. Josh backs this with efficiency data (Irving 42nd of 46 backs in yards per carry) and the Buccaneers' league-low 14 explosive plays, concluding this is a clear sell-high/sell-low regardless of Irving's name value.

What it means for your roster

  • Start with confidence: Gibbs, Robinson, Jonathan Taylor, Kyren Williams, and James Cook are locked-in top-tier plays this week regardless of matchup nuance.
  • Buy low now: Chase Brown (vs. Miami) and target CeeDee Lamb/George Pickens-adjacent Cowboys pieces alongside Javonte Williams, whose touchdown equity makes him a strong start against Tampa Bay.
  • Monitor Wednesday-Friday injury reports before locking lineups: Ramondre Stevenson (Henderson becomes an RB1 if he sits), Jeremiah Love (pick up Tyler Allgeier immediately as a direct handcuff), and Rashod Bateman-level roster churn in Denver.
  • Play both Chicago backs if you own them, but lean Monangai for goal-line equity given Ben Johnson's public frustration with Swift's ball security.
  • Sell Bucky Irving now while his name value is still propped up by early-season hype; Sean Tucker's short-yardage role is a real, recurring pattern, not a one-week blip.
  • Treat Will Shipley as unrosterable in most formats until Philadelphia's offensive line stabilizes, and watch the Saquon Barkley trade chatter develop given the Jurgens trade signals a broader roster teardown.
“This is as speculative as we've ever gotten, and I like it.” — Josh

Players in this episode

Bijan Robinson · RB, ATL

↑ Ranked RB2, part of the only two-man S-tier, benefiting from an improved Falcons run game and high usage even as a favorite over Baltimore.

Jahmyr Gibbs · RB, DET

↑ Ranked RB1 against a weak Cardinals defense with a near-30 point team total and elite recent fantasy production.

Christian McCaffrey · RB, SF

↑ RB10, excellent usage (RB7-9) aside from a weather-affected Week 1; solid matchup outlook against Seattle despite tough defense.

Jonathan Taylor · RB, IND

→ RB3 despite a career-low 4.1 YPC, attributed to Colts offensive line regression rather than his own decline; still elite usage.

James Cook · RB, BUF

↑ RB5, stats nearly identical to last year despite dropping in usage rank; still projected for 10+ touchdowns.

Derrick Henry · RB, BAL

→ RB9 despite tough matchup and backup QB Cooper Rush-less situation (Lamar Jackson out); expected to still get 18+ touches.

Saquon Barkley · RB, PHI

→ Hosts speculated the Eagles could trade him given the team's apparent tank/rebuild, floating Vikings, Seahawks, and Broncos as fantasy trade destinations.

Omarion Hampton · RB, LAC

→ RB in C-tier, benefiting from a badly depleted/injured Broncos defense despite a banged-up Chargers line; expected heavy goal-line work.

Ashton Jeanty · RB, LV

→ RB12, snap share dipped to 43% early last week but rose late in blowout; still RB3 in expected points on below-average actual usage.

Kyren Williams · RB, LAR

↑ RB4, thriving in both positive and negative game scripts with heavy receiving work including a 10-catch game; Blake Corum could vulture if Rams blow out Bills.

Chase Brown · RB, CIN

↑ RB6, labeled a buy-low after facing brutal matchups; good spot now vs Miami, especially if Ja'Marr Chase/Tee Higgins sit out.

Jeremiyah Love · RB, ARI

↓ RB19, dropped due to a new right ankle injury suffered last game; unclear if he'll play, advised to roster Tyler Algier as handcuff.

Javonte Williams · RB, DAL

↑ RB7, touchdown-dependent (44% of points from TDs) in a great matchup vs Tampa Bay as big home favorites.

Bucky Irving · RB, TB

↓ RB27, flagged as a 'sell' after Sean Tucker began stealing short-yardage/goal-line work and Irving posted a season-low 66% backfield share with zero targets.

Cam Skattebo · RB, NYG

→ RB21, confusing role split with Najee Harris including goal-line/two-point usage questions; efficiency metrics poor versus a surprisingly stout Commanders run defense.

TreVeyon Henderson · RB, NE

↑ RB11, poised to be RB1-overall if Rhamondre Stevenson (ankle) sits, averaging 22.7 PPR points in his three starts without him.

David Montgomery · RB, HOU

↓ Dropped into C-tier (RB22) after a brutal four-week stretch, now sharing touches with emerging Woody Marks in a pass-funnel matchup.

Bhayshul Tuten · RB, JAX

↑ RB17, elite efficiency (2nd in success rate) despite tough blocking; Eagles defense depleted by injuries makes this a good matchup.

Quinshon Judkins · RB, CLE

→ RB18, poor efficiency metrics but increased pass-game role (career-high 7 targets) as Dylan Sampson is out; attributed partly to offensive line issues.

D'Andre Swift · RB, CHI

→ RB13, lost touches after an 'egregious' fumble per Ben Johnson; still part of a potentially 50/50 split with Kyle Monangai in a great Packers matchup.

Jaylen Warren · RB, PIT

↑ RB8, A-tier assuming Rico Dowdle (dislocated toe) is out; favorable matchup vs. a weak Colts run defense.

RJ Harvey · RB, DEN

↓ Criticized as a disappointing split-backfield option despite 10 catches last week, finishing only RB23; Dobbins' early-down snap share dropped, possibly signaling Harvey as goal-line back.

Kyle Monangai · RB, CHI

↑ RB20, ceiling play with potential for increased goal-line role after Swift's fumble and coach's comments; great matchup vs Packers run defense.

Tony Pollard · RB, TEN

↓ Downgraded due to a poor Titans offense that has scored under 20 points in 12 of Cam Ward's starts, facing Houston.

Brian Robinson · RB, ATL

→ Compared to a 'diet' David Montgomery role, expected to see work in all four quarters and is flex-worthy given Atlanta's solid team total.

Aaron Jones · RB, MIN

↑ RB14, dominating touches (69 of 81 opportunities) since Jordan Mason's injury, facing a very generous Saints run defense.

Braelon Allen · RB, NYJ

↑ RB16 (listed as 20 in rankings order noted), played 30 of 32 snaps last week and projects well as a home favorite versus a Browns defense allowing many long runs.

Keaton Mitchell · RB, LAC

→ Gaining mix of touches/targets over the last two weeks and could see more work if Ladd McConkie is out.

Emanuel Wilson · RB, SEA

↑ RB15, expected to see 65-80% of backfield touches and goal-line work vs a banged-up 49ers front seven.

Ollie Gordon · RB, MIA

↓ RB29, had surprising explosive runs last week but still splitting snaps with Jalen Wright (60/40), facing a tough Bengals test; host predicts under 25.5 rushing yards.

Will Shipley · RB, PHI

→ RB28, top waiver target due to Eagles backfield injuries, but facing a dominant Jacksonville defensive line amid an Eagles line in disarray/tanking mode.
