Week 5 Draws Near: What's up with Daniels, Lamar, the Eagles, Seattle's RBs, & More? [Footballguys Daily Update 10/7]

Listen to the episode ↗

Bob Harris and Mike Dempsey run through week 5 injury news across the league, including Jaylen Daniels/Baker Mayfield in Tampa, Jayden Daniels' questionable status in Washington, a battered Eagles roster (Devonta Smith, Saquon Barkley, Lane Johnson's retirement), Lamar Jackson's outside chance to play, and backfield/receiver situations in Seattle, LA Chargers, and New England. The episode is primarily an injury-and-usage rundown with start-sit implications rather than broad strategy discussion.

This Footballguys Daily Update is a rapid-fire injury and lineup triage session covering nearly every major Week 5 storyline, from Thursday night's Bucs-Cowboys opener through late-breaking news on the Patriots, Chargers, and Eagles. Hosts Mike Dempsey and Bob Harris move team by team, with the central thread being that this week is defined by uncertainty at the top of several offenses — Daniels, Lamar, and a battered Eagles roster — forcing managers into bind-level decisions across multiple positions.

The arguments

Dak Prescott is a clear top-three quarterback play this week regardless of hand concerns. Harris notes Dak is already QB2 in Footguys' initial projections with a 47.5-point game total and Dallas as 10-point favorites, and he's "good to go" after stepping on his throwing hand. Harris extends the confidence to CeeDee Lamb (healthy, full practice participant, 21-of-23 target share dominance over George Pickens), George Pickens himself, and Javonte Williams in the same game script.

Jayden Daniels' questionable practice-report rollout is itself a mild red flag, but he should still be ranked at his pre-injury ceiling if active. Dempsey flags that Washington not clearing up Daniels' and McLaurin's status earlier in the week is, at best, a sign the team isn't sure; Harris agrees that delay usually isn't a good sign. Still, Harris says he'd rank Daniels as he would pre-injury since the issue is a braced left arm he just needs to avoid planting on.

Philadelphia's offensive collapse is severe enough to downgrade nearly every skill player, independent of each other's absences. With Devonta Smith likely out, Harris says the best play is "whoever you have," pointing to Cooper, Wicks, and Lemon as fair game, with Wicks getting Harris's personal confidence edge and Hurts reportedly favoring Cooper in high-leverage spots. Saquon Barkley (hamstring, week-to-week) is out, Tank Bigsby is on IR, leaving Will Shipley as only an emergency flex given his pass-catching role against a defense that allowed Chase Brown 11 catches; Lane Johnson's surprise retirement compounds this by removing a future Hall of Fame tackle from an already shaky line (rookie Marcus Bell struggled against the Rams, Jurgens has a concussion, Dickerson still out).

Lamar Jackson's outside chance to play should trigger downgrades on everyone except Derrick Henry and Zay Flowers. Harris specifically carves out Flowers as earned, not protected — he's WR9 on the season despite playing only three games — but says Mark Andrews, Rashad Bateman, and similar names should be downgraded if Jackson sits, per Rapoport's report of only an outside chance to play.

Seattle's backfield picture clarified with mostly bad news except for Kenneth Walker's role. Schneider confirmed Jaydarian Price will miss at least three more weeks (not season-ending, contrary to no one's actual suggestion), and Seattle passed on signing Joe Mixon after a failed physical. Guest Marcus Mosher argued Walker is a legitimate low-end RB2 even in a timeshare, calling him a good scheme fit with a track record dating back to Green Bay.

The Chargers' offensive line injuries mirror last year's late-season collapse, and Ladd McConkey shouldn't be trusted even if active. Harris says he barely trusts McConkey on two good feet, let alone playing through a foot injury and cracked rib, and wants to see him finish a full game before trusting him again. Both tackles are now hurt (one on IR, Joe Alt with a neck issue), which Harris compares directly to last year's unit-wide collapse after Slater and Alt both went down.

What it means for your roster

  • Start Dak, Lamb, Pickens, and Javonte Williams with confidence in the Thursday opener; Dallas projects as a near-50-point game environment.
  • If Smith/Brown are out for Philly, stream Wicks over Cooper or Lemon as the highest-confidence option, but temper expectations given the offensive line attrition behind Lane Johnson's retirement.
  • Treat Will Shipley strictly as an emergency flex, not a stand-alone RB1/2 play, despite Seattle's pass-catching back vulnerability.
  • If Lamar sits, bench or downgrade Andrews and Bateman hard; Flowers is now a true weekly starter independent of Jackson's status, and Henry remains the clear exception.
  • Kenneth Walker is worth rostering as a solid flex-or-better even in a timeshare, per Mosher's read on scheme fit.
  • Avoid starting McConkey even if he's active, and be wary of any Chargers skill-position investment given the second straight year of line injuries compounding.
  • Emeka Egbuka is a viable deep-league/bind start behind Daniels if Mayfield remains out; Godwin only in true emergencies, Trey Palmer off the board.
“I can't think of anything good about this.” — Bob Harris

Players in this episode

Lamar Jackson · QB, BAL

↓ Only an outside chance to play in week 5 due to an ankle issue per Ian Rapoport.

↑ Healthy after a minor thigh issue, full participant in walkthrough, and dominating targets (21-3 ratio over George Pickens) in a plus matchup.

Saquon Barkley · RB, PHI

Kenneth Walker · RB, KC

↑ Described by guest Marcus Mosher as a solid power back who fits Seattle's offense well and delivers when given opportunity.

Jayden Daniels · QB, WAS

→ Expected back as Buccaneers starting QB for a second straight week while Baker Mayfield sat out walkthrough.

Jayden Daniels · QB, WAS

→ Goal is for him to start Sunday; team hasn't given an early update, which hosts view as a mild bad sign, but if he plays he should be ranked as he was pre-injury.

George Pickens · WR, DAL

→ Still a start but losing out on targets significantly to a healthy CeeDee Lamb.

Jalen Hurts · QB, PHI

→ Noted to favor Darius Cooper in high-leverage spots among the Eagles' depleted receiving corps.

Javonte Williams · RB, DAL

↑ Listed among Cowboys players to start in a high-scoring projected matchup vs Tampa.

DeVonta Smith · WR, PHI

↓ More likely to miss this week's game than play, consistent with earlier reports of a 2-3 week injury.

Ladd McConkey · WR, LAC

↓ Day-to-day with a foot injury on top of a cracked rib; hosts say do not trust him even if he plays.

Dak Prescott · QB, DAL

↑ No concerns with his throwing hand after being stepped on; ranked QB2 in projections for a 47.5-point total game vs Tampa, a clear starter.

Diontae Johnson · WR

↓ Announced retirement after sitting out last week for personal reasons, a major surprise blow to an already struggling Eagles offensive line.

Efton Chism · WR, NE

→ Made a highlight one-handed catch; intriguing speculative waiver add in deeper leagues but still far from fantasy relevance.

Darius Cooper · WR, PHI

↑ Has been pushing for playing time and is favored by Jalen Hurts in high-leverage situations if Smith/Brown are out.

Will Shipley · RB, PHI

→ In line for work with Barkley out and Tank Bigsby on IR; worth an emergency flex given pass-catching ability against a defense that allowed 11 catches to Chase Brown.
