Week 4 Fantasy Recap: Injury Fallout, Overreactions & Week 5 Waiver Targets

Listen to the episode ↗

Kendall and Pete break down a brutal Week 4 injury wave (Lamar Jackson, Saquon Barkley, DJ Moore, Rashee Rice, Tyquan Thornton and more) and translate the fallout into concrete Week 5 waiver targets. They also chat with Scott Turner about Drake Maye's bounce-back and the Bears' offensive balance, then run through overreaction takes on Kenneth Walker, the Rams/Vikings/Texans, and several crowded backfields before closing with position-by-position waiver pickups.

# Week 4 Fantasy Recap: Injury Fallout, Overreactions & Week 5 Waiver Targets

This episode of the Fantasy Life Show tackles what Matt and Pete call one of the worst injury weeks in fantasy history, running through the waiver wire fallout from a brutal Sunday before pivoting to Scott Turner for a Patriots/Bears breakdown and closing with rapid-fire overreactions on backfields and breakout performances across the league.

The arguments

The Chiefs and Eagles backfields are the week's premium waiver priorities, but both carry real downside risk. With Saquon Barkley's hamstring injury (severity unknown at recording) and Rashee Rice/Tyquan Thornton both going down for Kansas City, Pete and Matt agree Tank Bigsby is the top add in shallow leagues while Will Shipley should be rostered as insurance. On the Chiefs side, they flag Jalen Royals as the safer near-term add over rookie Cyrus Allen since Royals was already stealing routes before the injuries, with Tyreek Hill (reportedly working his agent back toward Kansas City) framed as a lottery-ticket stash rather than an asset worth bidding heavily on given his age and ACL recovery.

Zay Flowers looks like a legitimate league-winner even with Lamar Jackson's ankle injury clouding the picture. Pete argues Flowers is now in JSN-outlier territory based on target share and utilization (fifth among all players in Week 4), and both hosts agree he's startable even if Tyler Huntley takes over, while everyone else in that offense besides Derrick Henry becomes matchup-dependent with a backup quarterback.

The Eagles offense is unrosterable right now outside of desperation plays. Matt notes the team was missing eight or nine starters by game's end, and Pete points out managers in their guillotine league were starting Tyson Bagent over Jalen Hurts — a sign of how bad the outlook is for DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert, and the passing-game pieces until health returns.

Kenneth Walker is performing like a true league-winning running back, and the Seahawks' decision to let him walk looks defensible rather than foolish. Pete argues Walker is additive to Kansas City specifically because he takes pressure off Mahomes, while Matt contends the Seahawks' remaining backfield (Emmanuel Wilson, Jadarian Price eventually) made them a more complete team without him. They don't fully agree, but neither thinks it's a disaster for Seattle given the Super Bowl context.

Jadarian Price's fantasy value has cratered now that Zach Charbonnet is weeks from returning. Pete is blunt that Price had every opportunity to seize the Seattle backfield and didn't, calling this outcome "dark" for managed leagues even though DFS/best-ball formats can still extract value from his big-play ceiling. Both hosts now rank Tyler Goodson as a more interesting stash than continuing to hold out hope for Price.

Kyler Murray is barely fantasy-relevant despite Minnesota's 4-0 start. Pete calls him "fringe waiver wire fodder" in most 12-team leagues, pointing to his disappearing rushing numbers (zero rushing touchdowns through four weeks) as the reason the efficient Vikings offense isn't translating to fantasy points, with TJ Hookinson's one monster game as the lone counterpoint.

What it means for your roster

  • Priority waiver claim: Tank Bigsby in all formats, Will Shipley as league-dependent insurance if Barkley's injury lingers.
  • Hold, don't panic-sell: Zay Flowers remains a must-start even with Huntley at quarterback; Puka Nakua should not be sold low over pre-hernia reports unless you're getting a true round-one return (Jonathan Taylor/CMC tier).
  • Bench/avoid: Any Eagles skill-position player outside of spot-start desperation; David Montgomery, whose efficiency has collapsed to the point Woody Marks may be the better real-life back even if Montgomery keeps goal-line work.
  • Speculative stash only: Tyreek Hill and Cyrus Allen — treat both as lottery tickets, not immediate lineup help; Keon Coleman is a bye-week/DJ Moore-injury streamer, not a long-term buy given his boom-bust history.
  • Downgrade for season-long value: Jadarian Price now ranks behind Tyler Goodson as a stash given Charbonnet's imminent return and Seattle's reluctance to feature him.
  • Quarterback streaming: Prioritize Jacoby Brissett (vs. Lions) and CJ Stroud (vs. Titans) over deeper-league names like Jalen Daniels; bench Kyler Murray if you have any viable alternative.
“I think we're in the pits of hell. Truly. This is awful.” — Pete

Players in this episode

Jahmyr Gibbs · RB, DET

↑ Mentioned as Walker's closest competitor for highest-scoring fantasy running back on the season.

Puka Nacua · WR, LAR

→ Reports of a 'pre-hernia' condition raised sell-now questions, but hosts say hold unless offered elite RB1 value in return; still dominant target earner over Davante Adams.

Lamar Jackson · QB, BAL

↓ Left Week 4 with an ankle injury (MRI pending); hosts are cautiously optimistic he avoids a long absence but flag last year's injury history as concerning.

Drake Maye · QB, NE

↑ Scott Turner says Maye looked more comfortable, used his legs well (50+ rushing yards) and led a 97-yard TD drive, though still has ball-security issues (fumbles, one weak INT).

Saquon Barkley · RB, PHI

↓ Suffered a hamstring injury that reportedly isn't good; hosts expect him to be cautious and possibly miss time.

Kyren Williams · RB, LAR

↑ Posted a season-high 36.7 fantasy points (80 rush yards, 2 TDs, 10 receptions); hosts say Rams have clearly turned to him as a true bell cow over Blake Corum despite past timeshare talk.

Jeremiyah Love · RB, ARI

→ Concerning quotes about being tired and not wanting a heavy workload suggest a more volatile committee with Allgeier than expected; hosts remain believers long-term.

Kenneth Walker · RB, KC

↑ Hosts call him a true league-winner: 96% of rush attempts, goal-line role, more TDs through 4 weeks than all of last year, battling Jahmyr Gibbs for top fantasy RB.

Nico Collins · WR, HOU

↑ His return is viewed as essential since he's 'the engine' of the Texans' offense, which has nothing without him.

Rashee Rice · WR, KC

↓ Left Week 4 with a hamstring injury; status unclear entering Chiefs' bye week.

Colston Loveland · TE, CHI

→ Posted a 30% target share in Week 4, part of a shifting target carousel among Bears pass catchers.

Zay Flowers · WR, BAL

↑ Despite the QB injury, hosts say Flowers should still start even with Tyler Huntley under center given his elite target share and utilization (5th-best in Week 4).

David Montgomery · RB, HOU

↓ Efficiency has cratered and Woody Marks is gaining more goal-line/overall work; hosts say he may have flipped to a true committee or even a 35% role.

DJ Moore · WR, BUF

↓ Re-aggravated his shoulder injury again, clouding his fantasy outlook and opening the door for Keon Coleman.

Jadarian Price · RB, SEA

↓ Failed to seize the Seahawks backfield job despite opportunity, now a risky stash as Zach Charbonnet nears return and Emmanuel Wilson/Joe Mixon loom.

Rhamondre Stevenson · RB, NE

→ Turner says Stevenson remains trusted in situational/third-down/pass-pro work over Henderson, expect continued committee but Stevenson in high-leverage spots.

Kyle Monangai · RB, CHI

↑ Had an eye-popping performance behind Chicago's dominant offensive line under Ben Johnson (54 rush attempts in game).

Rome Odunze · WR, CHI

→ Had a 20% target share in Week 4 as part of the Bears' rotating target distribution; Turner says targets will keep shifting week to week.

Kyler Murray · QB, MIN

↓ Hosts are bearish, saying he's lost his rushing upside (minimal carries, no rushing TDs) and is now fringe-waiver value for fantasy despite the Cardinals' 4-0 record.

Tyler Allgeier · RB, ARI

→ Scored a long touchdown and saw tightened snaps versus Jeremiah Love, who may have been banged up and made comments about needing lighter workload.

C.J. Stroud · QB, HOU

↑ Good streaming target versus Tennessee, and his return to health with Nico Collins back is seen as key to a Texans turnaround.

Zach Charbonnet · RB, SEA

↑ Practice window opened; expected back soon and reportedly the team's preferred back, further clouding Jadarian Price's outlook.

Brenton Strange · TE, JAX

↑ Led tight end usage with 88.9% route participation and 36.4% target share vs. Bengals; recommended waiver streamer due to good game environment.

Tyreek Hill · WR

→ Reportedly being shopped by his agent back to the Chiefs; hosts view him as a luxury bench stash/lottery ticket given his age and ACL recovery, not worth heavy FAAB spend.

Tank Bigsby · RB, PHI

↑ Took over as lead back after Barkley left, called the top waiver-wire pickup of the week in most leagues.

Emanuel Wilson · RB, SEA

↑ Delivered 21 of 33 carries and 27 fantasy points filling in, should be rostered given the crowded but unsettled Seahawks backfield.

Cyrus Allen · WR, KC

→ Interesting rookie but only ran 5 routes, appears below Royals in pecking order.

Jaydon Blue · RB, PHI

→ Not substantively discussed beyond list mention.

Jarquez Hunter · RB, MIA

→ Mentioned only in passing list context, no substantive commentary.

Jacoby Brissett · QB, ARI

↑ Favored streaming QB option this week facing the Lions' fantasy-friendly defense.

Keon Coleman · WR, BUF

↑ Posted a strong 84 utilization score (top-15 WR) with DJ Moore out, but hosts caution it's largely a speculative/matchup add since Moore may return.

Mike Gesicki · TE, CIN

↑ Historically benefits most when Ja'Marr Chase or Tee Higgins are out, making him a sneaky streaming option this week.

Tyquan Thornton · WR, KC

↓ Suffered a gruesome ankle injury and is likely done for the season despite a big game prior to injury.

Jalen Royals · WR, KC

↑ Already running routes ahead of Cyrus Allen in KC's rotation, seen as the safer immediate add if Rice/Thornton miss time.

Will Shipley · RB, PHI

↑ Spelled Bigsby after Barkley exited; recommended as a deeper add especially if Bigsby's own injury (undisclosed) proves significant.

Tyler Huntley · QB, BAL

↓ If forced into action, hosts note the Ravens' offense stalled badly (no points, 4 punts) with him under center, downgrading everyone except Derrick Henry.
