WR Rankings Countdown: 20-11 + Risky Picks - Fantasy Football Podcast for 8/7

Listen to the episode ↗

The Footballers dive into news (Carson Beck's strong Hall of Fame game, Alec Pierce injury update, Patriots WR room chaos, Jaelon Darling) before kicking off their WR rankings countdown from 20 to 11. The core debate centers on touchdown-dependent floor picks (Tee Higgins) versus target-share monsters stuck in poor QB situations (Tetairoa McMillan, Zay Flowers), plus injury-risk upside plays like Rashee Rice and Malik Nabers.

This episode of Play Action covers the Fantasy Footballers' wide receiver countdown from 20 to 11, layered with fresh news on Alec Pierce's ankle rehab, the Patriots' muddled receiver room, and the Cardinals' Carson Beck audition. The hosts' central argument is that in this range, target share and offensive environment matter more than name recognition, and touchdown-dependent players get systematically ranked below their ADP while volume-driven players in ascending offenses get bumped up.

The arguments

Tee Higgins at 20 is a floor pick, not a ceiling call. Andy and Jason have him above Mike, but all three rank him below his WR14 ADP because his fantasy production is unusually touchdown-dependent (21 touchdowns over two years, trailing only Chase and Amon-Ra). Jason argues that projecting a realistic touchdown total (8-9) drags him down even though his upside is top-six if Chase gets hurt or both he and Burrow stay fully healthy, which hasn't happened often.

Tet McMillan's ceiling is capped by Bryce Young, not his own talent. Mike, who once had McMillan in his top 10, now has him at 15 while Andy and Jason are more skeptical; all three agree Young needs to jump from 25% to 30%+ target share utilization and from roughly 3,000 to 3,500 passing yards for McMillan to break out, calling it a "big step" for both player and quarterback that hasn't shown up in Young's four-year track record.

Devontae Smith at 18 feels like a mispriced floor. Jason has him highest at 16, arguing Smith is fully capable of being a true alpha WR1 and that public perception (best ball ADP already WR12-13) will keep pushing his price up; the hosts agree passing on him here risks looking foolish six weeks into the season.

Zay Flowers' touchdown light finally turns on, or it doesn't. Mike, previously the low man, jumps him to 14 after noting Flowers' target share has risen every year (24% to 25% to 29%) and citing Baltimore's new offensive environment under a different coordinator dynamic with Lamar Jackson. Jason counters that touchdowns (4-5-5 across three years) are the swing variable and compares the bet to Trey McBride's touchdown explosion once a system variable changed — but stresses this is speculative, not guaranteed.

Emeka Egbuka is a projected high-end WR2 with home-run upside. Mike made him his Monday fire pick and has him at 11, well above Jason (15) and far above his own admission that Mike had "no one" else ranked similarly; the case rests on Mike Evans' departure clearing the Z role, offensive line concerns aside, and Baker Mayfield's continued investment in him, though Jason flags Tristan Wirfs' injury as a real complication.

Malik Nabers' price has to account for a real ramp-up period, not just his talent ceiling. Mike is highest on Nabers; Andy and Jason are notably lower (11-12) specifically because Giants camp reports are ugly and OC Matt Nagy is drawing heavy criticism, plus Nabers is coming off a torn ACL. The disagreement isn't about talent (all agree he'd be a top-five pick healthy) but about whether this is the year the Giants offense supports him or a year Andy believes the team is still a season away from delivering.

Chris Olave's target share will get diluted by Jordan Tyson, but the offense should be more efficient. Jason models Olave's target share dropping from 30% to about 24.5% with Tyson added, but argues the offense's overall efficiency should rise sharply with a full season of Tyler Shough over Spencer Rattler — citing a hypothetical 17-game Shough pace of 102 catches, 1,400 yards, and nearly 13 touchdowns for Olave. Andy separately takes the dynasty side of Olave over Garrett Wilson, calling Olave the better player with the better quarterback, while flagging Wilson's concussion history as his own hesitation.

What it means for your roster

  • Tee Higgins: fine value at his current WR14 ADP as a floor-safe WR2, but don't chase him expecting top-six upside unless Chase misses time.
  • Tet McMillan: treat as a talented WR2/flex dart throw, not a locked-in WR1; his outcome hinges entirely on whether Bryce Young takes a real step forward.
  • Devontae Smith: prioritize him ahead of his rising ADP (currently WR17/fourth round) — the hosts think passing here will look like a mistake by midseason.
  • Zay Flowers: a strong value target late given his elite target share; buy the touchdown-regression-to-the-mean bet, but temper expectations if Lamar/offense chemistry questions linger.
  • Emeka Egbuka: worth reaching for as a high-upside WR2 at his current WR19 ADP, especially if you believe the Evans vacancy fully funnels to him.
  • Malik Nabers: a boom-or-bust third/fourth-round pick; consider letting another manager draft him and target-trading for him midseason once his price cools from a slow start, rather than paying the premium now.
  • Chris Olave: solid PPR floor with WR1 upside if Shough's efficiency holds, but expect a real dip in target share (Jason projects ~24.5%) with Jordan Tyson added — don't draft him expecting a repeat of last year's 30% workload.
Say Flowers for the win, guys.” — Andy Holloway

Players in this episode

Trey McBride · TE, ARI

Jason said if Carson Beck starts most/all of the season, he'd flip his prior stance of ranking McBride over Brock Bowers, since Beck likely won't replicate Kyler Murray's touchdown numbers.

Brock Bowers · TE, LV

Considered a safer bet than McBride if Carson Beck ends up starting for Arizona over Kyler Murray.

Rashee Rice · WR, KC

Ranked 11-16 across hosts; coming off a torn ACL, some hosts are cooling due to lack of burst in camp clips, though his career target share (30%) is elite when healthy.

Malik Nabers · WR, NYG

Ranked WR12; coming off a destroyed knee with underwhelming camp offense reports and new OC Matt Nagy concerns; hosts expect a slow start but massive value if patient.

Chris Olave · WR, NO

Ranked WR11; had far better per-game splits with Tyler Shough at QB than Spencer Rattler last season, but his 30% target share is expected to drop to ~24.5% with Jordan Tyson/Addison added.

Tee Higgins · WR, CIN

Ranked WR20 despite ADP of WR14; hosts note his fantasy production is heavily touchdown-dependent (21 TDs over two years) and he battles injury history, but they still see top-10 upside if healthy.

Tetairoa McMillan · WR, CAR

Ranked at 19 (Mike highest at 15); needs Bryce Young to improve and his own target share to jump from 25% to 30%+ to become a true fantasy WR1.

Garrett Wilson · WR, NYJ

Ranked WR14; posted elite per-game numbers before injury last year (WR5 pace) and benefits from a much-improved Jets offensive line and passing-oriented QB change.

DeVonta Smith · WR, PHI

Ranked WR18, seen as undervalued relative to ADP (WR17/12-13 in best ball); hosts call him a true alpha-caliber WR1 talent being overlooked.

Jaylen Waddle · WR, DEN

Ranked WR16; production has underwhelmed the last three years despite talent, largely tied to his and Tua's injury history.

Jaylen Waddle · WR, DEN

Dealing with a minor strain, expected back in 4-5 days; not considered serious.

Emeka Egbuka · WR, TB

Ranked WR15 (Mike's fire pick at 11); expected to be the focal point of Tampa's passing offense playing the Z role for Baker Mayfield, with little competition for target share.

Zay Flowers · WR, BAL

Ranked WR17; his target share has risen every year (24%→25%→29%) but touchdown production has lagged; a new offensive dynamic with Lamar Jackson could finally unlock scoring upside.

Tyler Shough · QB, NO

Hosts project he could throw for more yards than Caleb Williams this year and believe his presence (vs. Rattler) is the key variable boosting Olave's efficiency.

Alec Pierce · WR, IND

Reports of 'no timetable' on his ankle recovery are being overblown; he's rehabbing well, but hosts will worry if he's not practicing in three weeks; considered the bona fide WR1 in Indy.

Jordan Addison · WR, MIN

Newly added target expected to reduce Chris Olave's target share this season.

Josh Downs · WR, IND

With Pierce's recovery uncertain and Michael Pittman gone, Downs is being pushed as an early-pick beneficiary who will see more opportunity.

Romeo Doubs · WR, NE

Missed practice Wednesday and Thursday but it's not believed to be serious.

Kayshon Boutte · WR, NE

Requested a trade and skipped voluntary activities, yet reports say he's been one of the best Patriots WRs in camp, creating a confusing target-share picture in New England.

Carson Beck · QB, ARI

Beck went 14/18 with strong downfield throws in the Hall of Fame game, raising questions about whether he could take over the starting job and impact Trey McBride's ceiling.
