Week 5 Friday Injury Report: What to Look For [Footballguys Daily Update 10/9]

Listen to the episode ↗

Bob Harris and Mike Dempsey run through Friday Week 5 injury reports across the league, flagging which stars are trending toward playing versus sitting, including the Bengals WRs, 49ers/Seahawks rest cases, Commanders receivers, and backfield situations in New Orleans, Pittsburgh and Chicago. They also touch on the Broncos' coaching shakeup with Sean Payton taking over play-calling.

This episode is a rapid-fire Friday injury-report rundown of every Week 5 game script, hosted by Mike Dempsey and Bob Harris. The through-line isn't one big argument but a recurring diagnostic: distinguishing genuine health concerns from coach-mandated rest days for stars, and flagging which backup running backs and depleted receiver corps deserve immediate redraft/waiver attention.

The arguments

Jamar Chase is the clear lean over Tee Higgins for Week 5 Bengals availability. Bob Harris called it an easy decision heading into the weekend since Chase practiced Thursday and the team can push final clearance to Sunday, while Higgins was only doing side-field rehab work with no such path to clearance this week.

The rest-day trend for workhorse stars is now a pattern, not a warning sign. Harris pointed to Christian McCaffrey, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Brock Bowers all sitting out midweek practice and said this reflects teams managing heavy workloads during the week rather than resting players on gamedays — he expects "lots of limited and rest days" for these players going forward and advised not reading injury risk into it.

Washington's receiver corps and backfield are both compromised, and the RB release is a real gamble. Terry McLaurin has not practiced and Harris sees little hope for him; Stephon Diggs also missed Thursday, leaving uncertainty atop the receiver group. Compounding things, Washington released rookie sixth-rounder Katron Allen hoping to stash him on the practice squad, which Dempsey and Harris both flagged as risky since any of the other 31 teams could claim him, especially with Rashad White and Ja'Cory Croskey-Merritt both banged up and Austin Ekeler left to carry a larger workload.

Kyle Monangai's toe injury is a bigger deal than the earlier thumb narrative suggested. Harris said the toe issue, reported as potentially costing more than a week, should be treated as the default expectation of an absence, reopening the door for DeAndre Swift to reclaim the Bears backfield after last week's fumble-marred benching.

The Steelers and Colts backfields and receiver rooms both carry real downside beyond the top names. Rico Dowdle's Week 5 status is still undecided per Mike McCarthy, but even if he suits up, Harris expects Jaylen Warren to remain the clear lead back given his strong play in Dowdle's absence. On the Colts side, Harris said he has reservations about trusting any Colts skill player not named Jonathan Taylor or Tyler Warren, including a limited Keenan Allen, until the offense shows more consistency. Separately, Michael Pittman re-aggravated his foot injury and will miss multiple weeks, making him a straightforward drop in 12-team redraft formats.

Denver is making a real offensive philosophy change, not just a title swap. Sean Payton confirmed he'll take over play-calling duties, and Harris said this was predictable given Denver's bottom-tier marks in yards, scoring, EPA, and explosive-play rate, plus Bo Nix reverting to short, line-of-scrimmage throws. He expects more bootlegs, half-field reads, and increased rushing volume to take pressure off Nix.

Alvin Kamara's Thursday absence is genuinely murky and worth tracking into Sunday. Harris noted conflicting Saints beat reporting — head coach Kellen Moore called it a scheduled rest day unrelated to injury, but Kamara left Sunday's game early after a big hit and missed the final possession, so Harris wants to see today's practice report before trusting any clean bill of health.

What it means for your roster

  • Start Chase with confidence over Higgins if you own both; Higgins remains a bye-week-caliber bench stash for now.
  • Drop or bench Michael Pittman in 12-team redraft; he's out multiple weeks with a re-aggravated foot injury.
  • Prioritize DeAndre Swift for the Bears backfield touches this week with Monangai's toe issue likely costing him time.
  • Treat Jaylen Warren as the preferred Steelers RB start even if Dowdle is active, given the workload split favors Warren.
  • Avoid rostering or starting any Colts skill player besides Jonathan Taylor or Tyler Warren, including Keenan Allen, until the offense shows improvement.
  • Don't panic-bench McCaffrey, Smith-Njigba, or Bowers over midweek rest days — treat it as scheduled maintenance, not injury risk, barring new news.
  • Monitor Kamara's status closely before locking him into lineups given the conflicting rest-day/injury signals.
  • If chasing Katron Allen on waivers, move fast — Washington is hoping no other team claims him off waivers to stash on their practice squad.
“Go get the player if he helps your football team.” — Bob Harris

Players in this episode

Ja'Marr Chase · WR, CIN

↑ Returned to practice working through concussion protocol and is the clear favorite between Cincinnati's two top receivers to play Sunday.

Christian McCaffrey · RB, SF

→ Didn't practice Thursday but hosts say it's a planned rest day, not a worry, as part of a pattern of resting stars during the week.

Jonathan Taylor · RB, IND

↑ Back as a full practice participant after a rest day, trusted as a clear top option in the Colts offense.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba · WR, SEA

→ Same planned rest-day pattern as McCaffrey; big workload leading to a light practice day, not a concern.

Lamar Jackson · QB, BAL

→ Did not practice, status worth monitoring.

Justin Jefferson · WR, MIN

↑ Limited again in a second straight practice, a good sign along with his stated desire to play; hosts believe a return is likely.

Jayden Daniels · QB, WAS

↑ Full practice participant all week and appears ready to play.

Caleb Williams · QB, CHI

↓ Missed practice again, raising concern about his Week 5 availability.

Brock Bowers · TE, LV

↑ Limited in practice but hosts have zero concern about his availability, expecting a pattern of rest-day limitations like McCaffrey and Smith-Njigba.

Malik Nabers · WR, NYG

→ Practicing but said he was more sore than usual; availability for Sunday still uncertain.

Tee Higgins · WR, CIN

↓ Only doing rehab work on a side field, not expected to play this week.

Cam Skattebo · RB, NYG

↑ Out of the non-contact jersey, a good sign for Week 5 availability; played over 60% of snaps last week despite a shoulder issue.

D'Andre Swift · RB, CHI

↑ Limited in practice but expected to see a redemption-tour workload with Monangai out after last week's fumble.

Bo Nix · QB, DEN

↓ Sean Payton is taking over play-calling duties; Nix has reverted to checking down near the line of scrimmage, expect more bootlegs and run-heavy game plans.

DJ Moore · WR, BUF

→ Did not practice; Bears play Monday night so managers relying on him should monitor his status closely.

Jaylen Warren · RB, PIT

↑ Has fared well in Dowdle's absence, averaging over 6.5 yards per carry and nearly 14 yards per reception over the past two weeks.

Terry McLaurin · WR, WAS

↓ Still not practicing, worked only on a side field with trainers; hosts see little hope for his availability.

Kyle Monangai · RB, CHI

↓ Now dealing with thumb and turf toe issues that could sideline him multiple weeks; hosts say to plan as if he won't play.

Rico Dowdle · RB, PIT

↓ Limited in practice with status up in the air; even if active, expected to play clear second fiddle to Jalen Warren.

Jordan Addison · WR, MIN

↑ Returned to practice in limited fashion; expected to play barring additional issues.

Stefon Diggs · WR, WAS

↓ Also did not practice Thursday, availability uncertain heading into Friday's report.

Michael Pittman · WR, PIT

↓ Re-aggravated his foot injury and will miss multiple weeks; hosts say it's safe to drop him in 12-team redraft leagues.

Alvin Kamara · RB, NO

→ Absence called a rest day by the coach and not injury-related, but he left Sunday's game early after a big hit, so his status needs close watching.

Emanuel Wilson · RB, SEA

↑ Expected to see another high-volume week in the lead role with 21 carries in each of the last two games as the offense leans on him.

Najee Harris · RB, NYG

→ Back at practice after a personal absence, part of a crowded three-way backfield split with Tyrone Tracy and Cam Skattebo.

Keenan Allen · WR, IND

↓ Limited again in practice; hosts say they have reservations about starting any Colt other than Jonathan Taylor and maybe Tyler Warren right now.

Austin Ekeler · RB, WAS

↑ With Rashad White and Ja'Corey Croskey-Merritt not 100%, a heavy workload could fall on Ekeler this week.
