Week 4 Fantasy Football WR, QB, and TE Rankings & Tiers: Studs, Sleepers, and Must-Starts (Ep. 2231)

Listen to the episode ↗

Tara Roberts, Pat Fitzmaurice and Andrew Erickson work through Week 4 WR, QB and TE rankings, debating volatile quarterback situations (Jameis Winston, Drake Maye) and how they affect pass-catchers like Malik Nabors and Romeo Doubs, while highlighting breakout volume plays (Michael Wilson, Parker Washington, Denzel Boston) and streaming gems at QB and TE. The central argument is that erratic QB play this season is scrambling WR tiers, and hosts lean on target share, matchup funnels and game-script/revenge narratives to separate must-starts from fades.

This Week 4 edition of FantasyPros' ranking show has Tara Roberts filling in alongside Pat Fitzmaurice and Andrew Erickson to sort through wide receiver, quarterback, and tight end tiers. The throughline is that erratic quarterback play across the league — Jameis Winston, Drake May, Jordan Love's offensive line, Bryce Young's leash — is making receiver rankings unusually volatile, forcing the hosts to bet on target share and matchup rather than trust established roles.

The arguments

Zay Flowers is a locked-in fantasy WR1 despite limited 2025 usage. Fitzmaurice notes Flowers has effectively played one full game but is averaging 19.5 yards per target and running 76% of his snaps from the slot against Tennessee. Erickson agrees on the floor but warns Derrick Henry's revenge-game narrative against his old team could tilt touchdown equity toward Henry in a blowout, capping Flowers' ceiling even in a great matchup.

Parker Washington is undervalued and could have his first ceiling game. Erickson ranks him WR9, ahead of both colleagues, arguing the Jaguars-Bengals matchup sets up as a shootout where Jacksonville is finally "pushed" for the first time this season, unlocking Washington's big-play upside from the slot. Fitzmaurice and Roberts agree the underlying profile (fourth in air yard share, fifth in target share) supports the move even if their rankings are more conservative.

Malik Nabors' value is entirely contingent on which Jameis Winston shows up. Erickson is skeptical (WR22), pointing to Nabors' 0.9 air yards per target last week and fearing a Rashee Rice–style underneath-only role under Matt Maggie's scheme. Fitzmaurice is higher (WR17), arguing the first two games (cold start, then bad weather) are unrepresentative, and the Cardinals' leaky secondary could force a shootout that unlocks the aggressive, downfield Winston.

DK Metcalf's poor efficiency against top cornerbacks makes him a risky Thursday night start. Both hosts flag he's drawn Christian Gonzalez, DJ Turner, and now Denzel Ward in three straight weeks, with Erickson noting Metcalf is in motion on just 0.6% of snaps — the league's lowest rate — making him trivially bracketed by defenses. Erickson explicitly prefers benching Metcalf for Denzel Boston this week, while Fitzmaurice still gives him token volume-based value.

Denzel Boston is outplaying his rookie class and has the league's best current matchup for perimeter receivers. Erickson calls him the best rookie receiver through three weeks and highlights Cleveland funneling 91% of receiver production to outside receivers — exactly Boston's alignment. Fitzmaurice fully co-signs, noting 2.27 yards per route run and saying he's starting Boston in two leagues.

Brock Purdy remains a must-start MVP-level quarterback, but his receiver corps is thinning. Erickson has him QB3, citing his dual-threat scrambling and a Denver defense that's already allowed QB9 finishes to Stafford and Mahomes. Fitzmaurice is more conservative (QB10), worried Mike Evans' rib injury and Trent Williams' uncertain status could strip Purdy of his top weapons.

Tyler Shough is now a legitimate weekly starter, not a streamer. All three hosts rank him top-9, with Erickson most aggressive at QB5, pointing to a true pass-funnel Falcons defense (AJ Terrell on IR) and a Saints offense playing fast in a dome against a Saints-can't-run situation that should produce 50+ dropbacks on Monday night.

What it means for your roster

  • Start Zay Flowers with confidence but temper touchdown expectations given Derrick Henry's revenge-game narrative could absorb goal-line work.
  • Prioritize Parker Washington over Metcalf in flex/WR2 spots this week — the Jaguars-Bengals shootout profile outweighs raw target share arguments for Metcalf.
  • Bench or downgrade DK Metcalf for Thursday night; start Denzel Boston instead if you own both, given Cleveland's perimeter funnel and Metcalf's man-coverage struggles.
  • Hold Malik Nabors and Isaiah Likely one more week rather than drop — both are tied to whether Winston reverts to his 2023 Buccaneers form against a leaky Cardinals defense, and both hosts worry about being "a week too late" if they cut bait now.
  • Move Tyler Shough into true starter range (top-6 to top-9 QB), not streamer territory, against Atlanta's pass funnel.
  • Stream Darren Waller as a top-12 tight end option against Detroit's historically bad tight end defense, especially with Jalen Coker and other Panthers pass-catchers banged up — Erickson's top streaming pick of the week.
“Tyler Shook, buckle up, baby.” — Andrew Erickson

Players in this episode

Drake Maye · QB, NE

→ Falling in rankings after poor play, but Fitz remains somewhat optimistic given a matchup vs. Buffalo missing top corner Christian Benford.

Malik Nabers · WR, NYG

→ Hosts are split and uncertain given Jameis Winston's inconsistent play the last two weeks (cold start, bad weather); they debate whether a better Winston and good Arizona matchup could spark a bounce back.

Emeka Egbuka · WR, TB

→ With Baker Mayfield out and undrafted rookie Jalen Daniels starting, hosts float a narrative that Egbuka could benefit, but caution it's too early to drop him or rank him up based on QB change.

Zay Flowers · WR, BAL

↑ Returned from hamstring injury with elite target share and yards per route run from the slot; hosts love him as a locked-in WR1 versus Tennessee, though Derrick Henry's revenge-game narrative could siphon some touchdown equity.

Luther Burden · WR, CHI

↑ Posted 11 targets and a big game vs. Philadelphia; hosts disagree on repeatability given a crowded target tree, but Erickson is high on continued slot usage against a weak Jets defense.

Brock Purdy · QB, SF

↑ Playing at an MVP level and leading all QBs in fantasy points since last December; hosts disagree on ranking due to Denver's solid pass defense and Mike Evans/Trent Williams injury concerns.

Tucker Kraft · TE, GB

→ Coming off a drop-filled dud; hosts fear his route share could shrink due to pass-protection needs against Tampa Bay's blitz-heavy scheme, though Erickson expects a bounce-back/redemption game.

Parker Washington · WR, JAX

↑ Strong target/air-yard share and yards per route run; hosts expect a potential ceiling game in a Jaguars-Bengals shootout against a leaky Cincinnati secondary.

DK Metcalf · WR, PIT

↓ Poor efficiency and heavy man coverage usage against elite corners (now Denzel Ward) make hosts wary of a repeat dud performance on Thursday night.

Michael Wilson · WR, ARI

↑ Massive route and target share (95% route share, 25%+ target share) make him a clear volume-based WR1 for Arizona despite poor efficiency; expected to see fewer garbage-time looks against the Giants than he did vs. SF.

Tyler Shough · QB, NO

↑ Hosts are extremely bullish, citing elite pass volume vs. a pass-funnel Falcons defense and continued Saints weapons; viewed as a locked top-5/6 QB, not just a streamer anymore.

Isaiah Likely · TE, NYG

→ Tied to Jameis Winston's inconsistency; good raw target volume and a favorable Arizona TE matchup keep him rosterable, but hosts hedge given recent quiet performances.

Josh Downs · WR, IND

↑ Role has shifted downfield (11.5 avg depth of target) with Alec Pierce out; hosts expect touchdown regression to positive versus a Washington defense vulnerable through the air.

Romeo Doubs · WR, NE

→ Inconsistent target volume (never more than 4 targets in a game) behind an injured Drake Maye passing attack; a potential Christian Benford absence could open a big-play chance.

Bryce Young · QB, CAR

↑ Expected to benefit from a high implied team total (51.5) vs. Detroit's leaky secondary and more aggressive play-calling under new OC; hosts project a strong bounce-back week.

Denzel Boston · WR, CLE

↑ Rookie X-receiver has excelled with Deshaun Watson, and hosts prefer him over DK Metcalf this week given the Steelers' funnel to perimeter WRs.

Malik Washington · WR, MIA

↑ Emerging as Miami's clear WR1 with double-digit targets and increased usage when Malik Willis is blitzed; deeper streaming option versus Minnesota.

Tre Tucker · WR, LV

↑ Return of Brock Bowers hasn't hurt him; hosts like him as a deeper flex versus the Chiefs given expected high-scoring game script.

Darren Waller · TE, CAR

↑ Emerging as a streaming TE1 option versus Detroit's historically bad TE defense, with rising target share after Jalen Coker's injury and strong red-zone/touchdown equity.

Jameis Winston · QB, NYG

→ Hosts repeatedly discuss whether the 'aggressive, YOLO' version of Winston (vs. the cold/weather-limited version from recent weeks) returns, which directly swings outlooks for Nabors and Likely.
