Week 3 Studs & Duds + Injury Reactions, Trade Talk - Fantasy Football Podcast for 9/28

Listen to the episode ↗

The hosts break down a chaotic Week 3 filled with major injuries (Achane's ACL, Mayfield's thumb, Jefferson's high-ankle sprain, Puka Nacua's lingering core injury) and react to the shocking Giants-Vikings trade for J.J. McCarthy. They run through studs like Brock Purdy, Tyler Shough, Jeremiah Love and Kenyon Sadiq, and duds like Drake May, the Chargers offense, Brian Thomas Jr. and Jadeon/Jadarian Price, while also discussing in-season trade strategy.

This Week 3 recap opens with a stunner: the Giants traded for J.J. McCarthy just as the hosts were set to discuss a slew of season-altering injuries. From there, the show works through a leaguewide stud/dud breakdown while circling a common thread — Week 3 was defined by attrition, with several fantasy-relevant backfields and receiving corps thrown into flux overnight.

The arguments

The Giants' trade for J.J. McCarthy is a defensible win-now gamble, not a referendum on Jaxson Dart. The hosts noted the Vikings dealt McCarthy for a 2027 fifth-round pick right after Dart's ACL tear, and while it looked connected, they argued the moves are unrelated — the Giants simply wanted more upside than Jameis Winston, who has looked "terrible," and McCarthy gives them a real shot at the playoffs at 2-1. They don't expect him to start Week 1 of his tenure and view it as a minor dynasty uptick since he now has a real path to starts.

Puka Nacua's injury is a genuine red-alert situation. Andy flagged concern weeks ago about a possible sports hernia, and despite McVay's shifting labels (hip, groin, "not a hernia," then contradicted), the hosts believe it looks like a core muscle injury. Their worry isn't just missed time — it's whether Nacua returns to his explosive form even once he's back, since these injuries often linger and worsen with delayed rehab.

Devon Achane's ACL tear doesn't hand Ollie Gordon a slam-dunk workload. The hosts liked what they saw from Gordon filling in, but stressed Jalen Wright (out with a foot injury) remains ahead of him on the depth chart and this is likely to become a committee. They cited Achane's unsustainable 81% snap share and sub-10-point average as reasons this isn't the season-saving pickup panic suggests.

The Chargers are fundamentally broken, and it's a coaching problem, not a personnel one. Despite a first-round QB, a first-round back, two solid tackles, and playmakers at receiver, the Chargers have scored 14, 14, and 16 points across three weeks. The hosts pointed to Herbert's five-turnover meltdown and noted the "Chargering" trope has statistical teeth — teams with five-plus turnovers and a negative-four margin are 3-81 since 2013, and all three of those wins came against the Chargers. They laid blame on the Harbaugh-McDaniel staff given three straight underwhelming years.

Drake Maye should be dropped in shallower leagues, held only cautiously in deeper ones. The hosts cited nine fumbles and ten interceptions over his last seven games — a stretch matching peak-bad Jameis Winston — plus a lack of weapons with A.J. Brown out. One host argued for an outright drop; another preferred holding through Buffalo's tough matchup with an eye toward Week 7, when A.J. Brown returns and the schedule softens against Chicago, Miami, and Detroit.

Brian Thomas Jr. and Malik Nabors are victims of quarterback situations, not talent collapse. Thomas Jr.'s snap share cratered to 37% with one target despite Jacksonville scoring 34-35 points in two other games, prompting trade-candidate talk. Nabors managed five catches in a near-unwatchable 12-7 slog behind Jameis Winston, and the hosts see both as buy-low bounce-back names if their offenses stabilize.

Jeremiah Love has clearly taken over Arizona's backfield, and Chris Olave is producing like an elite receiver under Tyler Shough. Love out-carried Tyler Algeier 21-2 in a near-upset of San Francisco, which the hosts called the clearest signal yet of a real workload change. Shough's connection with Olave, plus contributions from Michael Wilson, has the hosts calling Shough a legitimate QB3 for now.

What it means for your roster

  • Do not chase Ollie Gordon as a league-winner — expect a real committee with Jalen Wright once healthy; treat him as a streaming option, not a takeover back.
  • Bench or heavily discount Puka Nacua even once cleared to return; the hosts flagged real risk his explosiveness doesn't come back right away.
  • Drop Drake Maye in shallow/medium leagues; in deeper formats, stash him but do not start him until Week 7 or later when A.J. Brown returns and the schedule eases.
  • Sell high on Chargers pieces where possible — Herbert, Hampton, and Ladd McConkie are stuck in a dysfunctional offense the hosts don't expect to fix itself before the bye.
  • Buy low on Jeremiah Love in leagues where owners haven't priced in the workload shift; he's trending toward a near-bell-cow role.
  • Target Brian Thomas Jr. and Malik Nabors as buy-low trade candidates if their record-holders are panicking over quarterback play — both remain talented pieces in currently broken offenses.
  • Prioritize Kenyon Sadiq and Chris Olave on waivers/in lineups — Sadiq's role is expanding behind injuries, and Olave is playing like a true elite option under Shough.

Players in this episode

Josh Allen · QB, BUF

→ Appeared to be limping postgame with a possible knee contusion (not believed to be an MCL sprain); hosts expect possible limited practice this week.

Puka Nacua · WR, LAR

↓ Dealing with a hip/groin injury that sounds like a core muscle injury/sports hernia; hosts call it a 'red alert' concern since it could sap his explosiveness even after he returns.

De'Von Achane · RB, MIA

↓ Torn ACL, out for the year; was averaging under 10 fantasy points despite an 81% snap share, so hosts caution against assuming a clean workload transfer to his backups.

Drake Maye · QB, NE

↓ Turnover-prone (9 fumbles/10 INTs in 7 games), looked visibly distraught on the sideline; hosts debate dropping him now versus holding for when A.J. Brown returns and schedule eases around Week 7.

Justin Jefferson · WR, MIN

↓ Left with what looks like a high-ankle sprain; hosts note these injuries are trending toward 6-8 week recoveries this year instead of the usual 1-3.

Jeremiyah Love · RB, ARI

↑ Given the workhorse role with 21 carries plus receiving work, vastly outpacing Tyler Allgeier's 2 carries; hosts believe the change is largely permanent.

Chris Olave · WR, NO

↑ Called an elite receiver again, consistently making difficult sideline catches; hosts say his career was nearly wasted due to poor QB play before Shough.

Tetairoa McMillan · WR, CAR

→ Disastrous 2-for-17 line blamed partly on Coker's injury and heavy pass rush; hosts still view him as a good player and like him vs. Detroit's banged-up secondary next week.

Jaxson Dart · QB, NYG

↓ Out for the season, prompting the Giants to trade for McCarthy; hosts noted this doesn't really connect to Dart's long-term outlook.

Jaylen Warren · RB, PIT

↑ Had a big game with an explosive (if botched) long run; his role going forward vs. Kaleb Johnson/Rico is still TBD.

Brock Purdy · QB, SF

↑ Top scoring QB of the week, was efficient (2-97-4 stat line) despite the 49ers' receiver injuries.

Mike Evans · WR, SF

↓ Carted off with a rib injury after a big hit, adding to Tampa's receiver injury woes.

Christian Watson · WR, GB

↓ Video showed him grabbing his hamstring on his last route; nothing announced officially but hosts flag him as a watch for Wednesday injury reports.

Baker Mayfield · QB, TB

↓ Dislocated his thumb on an ill-advised third-and-19 scramble; MRI showed no fracture/ligament/tendon damage, expected out roughly 2-4 weeks.

Brian Thomas · WR, JAX

↓ Snap share dropped to 37% with just one target in a 35-point offensive game; hosts think he's now a trade candidate other teams should pursue.

Tyler Shough · QB, NO

↑ Threw for four more touchdowns and is now viewed as a legitimate QB3 in fantasy, producing well even under pressure.

Kenyon Sadiq · TE, NYJ

↑ Breakout game with 7 catches for 105 yards and a touchdown on only 58% of routes; expected to be a hot waiver pickup.

Jalen Coker · WR, CAR

↓ Left with a quad injury, which correlated with Tetairoa McMillan barely being targeted afterward.

Jaylen Wright · RB, MIA

→ Ahead of Gordon on the depth chart but missed the game with a foot injury; expected to still get a share of work when healthy.

J.J. McCarthy · QB, MIN

↑ Traded from Minnesota to the Giants for a 2027 fifth-round pick; hosts see it as a real dynasty uptick since he now has a path to start, though he likely won't start immediately.

Ollie Gordon · RB, MIA

→ Took over after Achane's injury and looked good, but hosts expect a committee with Jalen Wright rather than a full workload takeover.
