Week 5 Fantasy Football RB & QB Rankings: Must-Starts, Risky Plays & Top Streamers (Ep. 2246)
Tera Roberts, Pat Fitzmaurice and Andrew Erickson go through Week 5 fantasy RB and QB rankings, debating workload vs. matchup for backfields like the Bears, Giants, Browns, Seahawks and Chargers, then pivot to QB streamers highlighted by Jacoby Brissett's dream matchup, Jaden Daniels' injury return, and CJ Stroud's buy-low case. Throughout, the hosts stress that volume/role trust often matters more than box score results from the prior week.
# Week 5 RB & QB Rankings: Must-Starts, Risky Plays & Top Streamers
This episode is FantasyPros' weekly rankings deep-dive, with Tara Roberts hosting Pat Fitzmaurice and Andrew Erickson through the top-36 running backs and streaming-caliber quarterbacks for Week 5. The throughline: committee backfields and shaky offensive lines are making mid-range RB rankings genuinely difficult this season, while the quarterback streaming landscape has been volatile enough that both rankers admit their recent calls have missed.
The arguments
Chase Brown is locked in as a two-way volume monster regardless of the Bengals' receiver injuries. Erickson and Fitzmaurice agreed he's firmly RB6: he's averaged 19.8 touches a game with at least 15 in every outing, and with Ja'Marr Chase (concussion) and Tee Higgins (adductor) banged up, Cincinnati will lean on him even more. Erickson added that Brown's career-high 12 slot snaps last week signal a shift toward using him like a true receiver, which matters against a Miami defense that's third-worst versus slot targets.
Quinshawn Judkins' breakout game needs a home/road caveat. Erickson was most cautious (RB18), noting Judkins has a stark split — 68 rushing yards per game at home versus 44 on the road — and his underlying efficiency metrics (third-worst rushing success rate, fewest yards before contact) remain poor. Fitzmaurice (RB14) countered that the expanded passing-game role (seven targets last week) raises Judkins' floor regardless of matchup, and he trusts Cleveland's offense more now that Deshaun Watson has stabilized things.
Cam Skattebo is the clear workhorse the box score hasn't fully reflected yet. Both hosts are bullish despite a tough Washington run defense (fifth-fewest rushing yards allowed), because Skattebo has handled at least 18 carries in three of four games and leads him over Judkins in yards after contact per attempt (15 vs. Judkins' bottom-eight mark). Erickson specifically wants him over Devin Singletary/Najee Harris in any game script given James Winston's unpredictable offense.
Kyle Monangai's workload could regress hard, but the matchup is too good to sit him. Fitzmaurice pointed out Monangai had exactly 10 carries in each of his first three weeks before an outlier 30-carry game once DeAndre Swift fumbled and got benched; he expects a return closer to a 10-touch floor. Erickson pushed back harder, noting Monangai had already topped his normal workload (12 carries) in the first half alone before Swift's fumble, and raved about his per-carry efficiency against a Packers run defense now missing linebacker Edgerrin Cooper to a torn Achilles.
Omarion Hampton is a touchdown-or-bust fade for both rankers, well below ECR. Fitzmaurice (RB31) and Erickson (RB27) both cited the Chargers losing both starting tackles (Slater, Alt) and a true three-man committee (Hampton, Keaton Mitchell, Kimani Vidal) with Mitchell actually leading touches last week. Erickson called it the dead-cat-bounce play of the week — scoring is the only path to value, and the floor is near zero otherwise.
Jacoby Brissett is being underrated as a Week 5 streamer against Detroit. Erickson ranked him QB3, arguing that if Trey McBride and Michael Wilson are getting top-10 positional billing against this Lions defense, Brissett should be too — he's throwing 38+ times a game and the Lions allow 28.4 fantasy points per game to QBs. Fitzmaurice was a touch more conservative (QB8), flagging the loss of left tackle Paris Johnson as a real protection concern.
Tyler Shough should be benched against Minnesota despite elite volume. Both hosts dropped him well below ECR (Fitzmaurice QB15, Erickson QB24), pointing to the Vikings allowing the fewest fantasy points to QBs in the league (11.5/game), Shough's banged-up hand from Monday night, and a Saints line that broke down badly without its starting tackle against Atlanta.
What it means for your roster
- Start with confidence: Chase Brown (RB6 territory), Cam Skattebo, Kyle Monangai, CJ Stroud as a low-end QB1 against Tennessee.
- Start Jaden Daniels even over any streamer you may have added for his bye week, with the single exception of Brissett in a true smash matchup.
- Fade/sit this week: Omarion Hampton (touchdown-dependent, offensive line in shambles) and Tyler Shough (worst possible matchup despite gaudy volume).
- Stream priority: Jacoby Brissett is the top QB stream against Detroit; pair him with Daniels if you have both.
- Flex-with-caution range: Alvin Kamara (checkdown floor only vs. Minnesota), Ollie Gordon (any-port-in-a-storm lead back vs. Cincinnati), and Will Shipley (pass-catching role vs. Jacksonville, game-script proof floor).
- Monitor roster claims: Marshawn Lloyd as the clearest waiver add in Green Bay's backfield given Chris Brooks' injury and Caleb Johnson's fumbling issues.
“It's dead. It's dead already. This Chargers offense has nothing left in the tank.” — Andrew Erickson
Players in this episode
↓ Hosts are well below consensus, calling him touchdown-or-bust in a dysfunctional Chargers offense now missing both starting tackles (Alt, Slater) and out-touched by Keaton Mitchell last week.
↑ Jumped to RB4 in rankings after a massive game, now facing Buffalo.
↑ Averaging nearly 20 touches with two paths to value (rushing/receiving); with Chase and Higgins banged up, he should get a huge workload against a Miami defense that's weak vs. RBs.
→ Returning from elbow injury wearing a brace for the first time; hosts are split, with one moving him down due to poor career numbers vs. man coverage (which the Giants play often) and uncertainty about his scrambling.
↑ Cited as a smash play against Detroit's heavy cover-3 usage, used to argue Brissett should be ranked higher as a byproduct.
→ Clear workhorse usage returning (19 touches/gm season avg) with strong yards-after-contact, but tough Commanders run defense (5th fewest rush yards allowed) tempers enthusiasm.
↓ Lost snaps after a costly fumble last week but isn't expected to be fully benched; another fumble could cost him more work.
→ Posted a career receiving game Thursday night but hosts caution his rushing efficiency is poor and he's much better at home (68 rush yds/gm) than on the road (44), making a Jets road trip less appealing.
→ Referenced as last week's surprise inactive that burned managers, used as a reminder to check lineups before early kickoffs.
↑ Exploded for 30 carries after Deandre Swift fumbled; hosts love his efficiency/success rate but expect a more 50-50 split with Swift going forward, plus a thumb injury to monitor (Ben Johnson says not serious).
↓ Hosts fade him this week against a Vikings defense allowing the fewest fantasy points to QBs (11.5/gm), also citing a banged-up hand and shaky pass protection without the starting tackle.
↑ Most trusted Packers back right now with Chris Brooks hurt and Caleb Johnson fumbling; hit a season-high 55% snap share and caught 5 of 5 targets, making him a viable flex via touchdowns/targets.
↑ Coming off his best game of the season with Nico Collins back; hosts like him as a low-end QB1/streamer against Tennessee since Houston can't run and will lean heavily on the pass.
→ Rushing has been inefficient (3.0 YPC) and he's dealing with a knee that was checked Monday night, but he remains a receiving/checkdown option against a blitz-heavy Vikings defense, though Minnesota allows few RB catches.
→ Took over with 76% of RB opportunities last week and scored, but hosts worry his role shrinks in a tougher, more back-and-forth game script against the 49ers; efficiency outside two long runs was poor.
→ Still splitting work with Ollie Gordon; one host suggests he could see more outside runs against Cincinnati's interior-strong run defense (Dexter Lawrence).
↑ Top streaming QB this week against a Lions defense that can't stop anyone; hosts expect high volume (38+ attempts) and a potential top-3-5 fantasy performance despite missing left tackle Paris Johnson.
↑ Broke out with an 85-yard TD and out-snapped/out-touched Jalen Wright 22-12; hosts see him as the lead back by default in a thin Dolphins RB room, though matchup vs. Bengals is tough.
→ Likely to see significant snaps/pass-catching work with Lane Johnson retired and the Eagles' run game struggling badly; floor compared to his Week 18 rookie performance (4 catches, 35 yds on 53% snaps).
