Week 5! Eagles Are a Mess, Chase, Higgins, Bears RBs, Missing Jets, & More [Footballguys Daily Update 10/8]

Listen to the episode ↗

Bob Harris and Mike Dempsey run through Thursday's Bucs-Ravens-adjacent injury news before diving into a Week 5 league-wide injury report, with the Eagles' offensive line and skill-position depth collapsing, the Jets, Bengals, Commanders, Chargers and others all dealing with significant absences. The episode is almost entirely injury/practice-report driven, with start-sit guidance layered in for fantasy managers heading into the weekend.

This is the Footballguys Daily Update's Week 5 injury sweep, hosted by Mike Dempsey and Bob Harris, running through the Thursday night Bucs-Falcons game and then team-by-team practice-report fallout across the league. The through-line: this is one of the most injury-compromised weeks of the season, and several ambiguous situations (Eagles backfield, Chase, Jefferson, Lamar Jackson) require fallback plans rather than confidence in the primary options.

The arguments

The Eagles' offensive infrastructure is collapsing and nobody behind it is trustworthy. Dempsey and Harris flagged Devonta Smith not practicing, Dallas Goedert as a game-time stretch after limited work, Saquon Barkley week-to-week and unlikely to play, and Tank Bigsby already on IR. Harris added that trading Cam Jurgens for draft picks on top of Lane Johnson's retirement leaves Philadelphia down three offensive line starters, and joked it looks like a dynasty team tanking even if that's not the intent. He capped it by noting Jacksonville's run defense is elite, so whoever plays running back won't find easy yards.

Jamar Chase is trending toward a missed week, while Tee Higgins' absence is being read more optimistically. Harris said completely missing Wednesday in concussion protocol is a bad early sign for Chase, with the compressed week making a Sunday return harder to clear. On Higgins, both hosts treated his non-practice day as expected day-to-day management rather than a setback, with Harris citing the positive detail that Higgins was at least present in street clothes rather than hidden in treatment — though he stressed there's been no further word on actual progress.

Washington's receiving corps downgrade is more about competition than injury severity. With McLaurin and Diggs both out with hamstring issues, Harris moved Jayden Daniels down to a quarterback-19 range even as Daniels looks ready to start, attributing part of the drop to other quarterbacks ascending rather than Daniels regressing. If McLaurin and Diggs both sit, Harris ranks Antonio Williams as the top pass-catching option, with Traylon Burks in play and Jaylin Okonkwo intriguing long-term but not yet ready.

In New York, Cam Skattebo's non-contact limited practice should shift volume firmly to Najee Harris. Harris noted Skattebo played a season-low 65% of snaps per Pro Football Focus even before this issue, and that both Najee Harris and Tyrone Tracy are out-gaining him in yards per carry this season. Tracy still gets most third-down work, but Dempsey and Harris agreed Najee is the primary beneficiary if Skattebo can't go.

The Chargers' skill-position banged-up list matters less than their broader offensive dysfunction. Dempsey floated Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston both working off to the side as a possible target-share bump for Josh Palmer, but Harris pushed back, pointing to the fourth-fewest points scored in the league, Justin Herbert's six interceptions against four touchdowns, Joe Alt unlikely to play, and Rashawn Slater already out — framing the offense as trending in the wrong direction regardless of who's healthy.

Kendre Miller's value hinges entirely on Alvin Kamara's back issue, and the hosts set a specific range. With Kamara a non-participant, Harris pegged Miller as a low-end RB2/flex, specifically RB25–30, if Kamara can't suit up.

Multiple game-time-decision quarterbacks and receivers require contingency planning rather than confident starts. Lamar Jackson didn't practice all week but was called a player the team would trust without practice; Harris called him questionable at best for Sunday night and recommended having Tyler Huntley ready as a handcuff/streaming option. Zay Flowers, despite the hamstring limitation, remains a start given he's wide receiver 9 on the season despite missing time. Malik Nabors' recurring soreness was flagged as likely to become a weekly game-time decision rather than a one-off concern.

What it means for your roster

  • Bench/avoid Eagles skill players this week outside of desperation — the offensive line is down three starters and Jacksonville's run defense is elite; don't trust Smith, Goedert, or a Barkley replacement with confidence.
  • Hold Adonai Mitchell if your roster allows it, per Harris, but cut bait for a streaming option if you need an active body through the bye.
  • Plan for Najee Harris as the lead early-down back in New York if Skattebo's shoulder limits him again; Tracy still owns third downs.
  • Start Antonio Williams in Washington if McLaurin and Diggs both sit, with Burks as a depth option; don't chase Okonkwo yet.
  • Rank Kendre Miller as a flex-only play (RB25–30) if Kamara is out, not a must-start.
  • Have Tyler Huntley on standby for Ravens streamers given Lamar Jackson's unconventional sprain and questionable tag for Sunday night; keep starting Zay Flowers regardless.
  • Don't chase the Chargers' receiver timeshare (McConkey/Johnston/Palmer) as a buy-low — Harris views the whole offense as trending down, not just banged up.
“Let me see how I feel, and I'll let you know on Sunday.” — Mike Dempsey

Players in this episode

Ja'Marr Chase · WR, CIN

↓ In concussion protocol and missed Wednesday practice entirely, which hosts say is not a good early sign for clearing in time.

Lamar Jackson · QB, BAL

↓ Did not practice all week with an unconventional hamstring sprain, questionable for Sunday night; hosts advise having Tyler Huntley on standby.

Saquon Barkley · RB, PHI

↓ Did not practice and is considered week-to-week, unlikely to play this week behind a depleted offensive line.

Justin Jefferson · WR, MIN

Jayden Daniels · QB, WAS

↓ Practicing and expected to start, but hosts are downgrading him to roughly QB19 given other players rising and his receivers banged up.

↓ Limited in a non-contact jersey with a shoulder injury; played a season-low 65% of snaps per PFF, with Najee Harris averaging more yards per carry.

Zay Flowers · WR, BAL

Jaylen Waddle · WR, DEN

↓ Was limited at practice; caution advised starting Dolphins pass catchers outside of specific role players.

D'Andre Swift · RB, CHI

↓ Did not practice; some chatter suggests he could slide into more of a 50-50 or worse split, though hosts want more evidence before buying in.

Najee Harris · RB, NYG

↑ Would be the lead back if Skattebo can't go, mixing in on early downs alongside Tracy.

Tre' Harris · WR, LAC

→ Flagged as a rising target-share candidate if McConkey/Johnston are out, though hosts note the Chargers offense is scoring few points and Herbert is struggling.

Kendre Miller · RB, NO

→ Would move into flex/RB25-30 range if Alvin Kamara can't play.

Dameon Pierce · RB, PHI

→ Signed to the Eagles' active roster from the practice squad, partly due to Tank Bigsby going on IR.
