Setting the Table for Week 4; Bears QBs, Love's Rise, BTJ's Fall, & More [Footballguys Daily Update 9/30]

Listen to the episode ↗

Bob Harris and Mike Dempsey run through Week 4 injury and usage news, covering the Bears QB battle after Case Keenum's win, minor injury scares for Josh Allen and Amon-Ra St. Brown, a favorable Lions matchup with Carolina's corners banged up, and backfield/receiver situations in Arizona, Tampa Bay, Seattle, and the Rams. They close with a strong recommendation to bench Brian Thomas Jr. and monitor Jaylen Warren's workhorse role in Pittsburgh.

This Footballguys Daily Update episode is a rapid-fire injury and role-clarity check ahead of Week 4, with Mike Dempsey and Bob Harris working through backfield and receiver committees across a dozen teams. The throughline: several offenses have muddled or unresolved situations at RB and WR, and the hosts consistently favor proven volume over hot-hand narratives or name recognition.

The arguments

Chicago's QB competition remains genuinely unresolved. Bob Harris expects Tyson Bagent to get the start over Case Keenum despite Keenum's Monday Night win, reasoning that Keenum only played because Bagent had less practice time that week — a circumstance Ben Johnson may not replicate. Bob also floats gamesmanship (keeping the Jets guessing) as a reason Johnson won't name a starter early in the week, but his actual prediction is Bagent.

Jeremiah Love has taken over the Cardinals backfield, but Tyler Allgeier isn't dead as a bench stash. Bob compares the current split to last year's 60-35 Allgeier/Robinson share in Atlanta and notes Allgeier still scored eight touchdowns despite a limited role. He downgrades Allgeier to an "emergency or what-the-heck flex" rather than a real option, given only two carries this week.

Detroit's passing game gets a real boost this week. Bob points to a 27-point implied total in a 50.5-point game environment, plus Carolina potentially missing both starting corners (J.C. Horn out, Mike Jackson getting imaging). He specifically flags Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta as gaining extra juice on top of the already-locked-in Gibbs/St. Brown/Goff plays.

Brian Thomas Jr. is unplayable right now, independent of any trade speculation. Bob's case is entirely usage-based: 23 snaps and 13 routes run against the Patriots, fewer than backups Jacoby Meyers and Parker Washington (50 snaps, 27-28 routes each), with sixth-round rookie Josh Cameron out-snapping him too. He's averaging 5.3 fantasy points per game as WR77 through three weeks, and Bob says missing a breakout is more tolerable than continuing to roster five-point weeks — though he adds holding is reasonable if there's roster room before the November 10 trade deadline.

Tampa Bay's passing game is now a Baker Mayfield-shaped hole. With Jalen Daniels starting and Mayfield avoiding IR for now, Bob still plays Mike Evans (WR31 after Monday night) over Chris Godwin (WR52), calling Godwin more replaceable. He separately flags Tez Johnson as the pass-catcher most likely to benefit given Mayfield's track record of trusting him once Mayfield returns, with Cade Otton also out.

Seattle's Zavier Woods (Javarian/Price) backfield is too muddled to trust. Despite Mike McDonald's public vote of confidence in Price, Bob explicitly says he doesn't share that trust, citing back-to-back fumbles and a three-way split where Emmanuel Wilson actually out-carried Price 9-5 and outgained him. Bob's preference is to avoid unpredictable three-way committees when other flex options exist.

Jalen Warren is now a workhorse in Pittsburgh, with or without Rico Dowdle. Bob cites 127 yards on 17 carries, 3 catches for 49 yards, 70% of dropback snaps, and a near-RB10 finish last week as reasons to keep him high-end RB2, noting Dowdle didn't practice Monday ahead of Thursday's game.

What it means for your roster

  • Start Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs as locked plays this week, and consider Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta as upgraded plays given Carolina's potential two-corner absence.
  • Bench or drop Brian Thomas Jr. in shallower leagues; hold only if you have bench space before the November 10 deadline and want to see if a scenery change materializes.
  • Downgrade Tyler Allgeier to a deep-league-only flex, not a real starting option, given the Love hot-hand usage this week.
  • Start Mike Evans over Chris Godwin this week in Tampa's Mayfield-less offense; consider a speculative add of Tez Johnson as the pass-catcher likeliest to benefit long-term.
  • Avoid Javarian/Zavier Price in lineups if you have alternatives — the three-way Seattle split with Emmanuel Wilson is too unpredictable to trust as a flex.
  • Play Jalen Warren as a high-end RB2 regardless of Dowdle's Thursday status; monitor Dowdle's practice reports for early-week clarity.
  • Hold Marcus Mariota if you rostered him for Jayden Daniels insurance — Daniels is reportedly playing through an injury that will require offseason surgery, so his healthy stretch could be short-lived.
“I can live with missing a breakout more easily than I can live with five points a game.” — Bob Harris

Players in this episode

Jahmyr Gibbs · RB, DET

↑ Fantastic play this week given Detroit's high implied point total (27) against Carolina.

Josh Allen · QB, BUF

→ Took a hit to his left knee in Week 3 win over the Chargers; not considered a major concern but worth monitoring practice reports.

Puka Nacua · WR, LAR

↓ Uncertain to play this week with no strong optimism about his availability.

Amon-Ra St. Brown · WR, DET

→ Saw reduced snaps due to an undisclosed injury, but it doesn't sound serious given his history of playing through pain.

Jeremiyah Love · RB, ARI

↑ Given a big workload as the 'hot hand' over Tyler Allgeier this week by the coaching staff.

Jayden Daniels · QB, WAS

↓ Reportedly will need surgery after the season but is delaying it to keep playing; managers should hold Marcus Mariota as insurance given his injury history.

Tetairoa McMillan · WR, CAR

↓ Diagnosed with a PCL strain/sprain, early outlook is six to eight weeks out.

Emeka Egbuka · WR, TB

↑ Currently WR31 and still worth starting despite Mayfield's injury and Daniels stepping in.

Jadarian Price · RB, SEA

↓ Coach Mike McDonald says he still trusts him despite fumbles in back-to-back weeks, but hosts do not share that trust and would look elsewhere.

Jaylen Warren · RB, PIT

↑ Operated as the every-down back last week with 127 yards on 17 carries and 3 catches for 49 yards, projected as a high-end RB2 this week with Rico Dowdle possibly out.

Jameson Williams · WR, DET

↑ Becomes more interesting this week with Carolina missing both starting cornerbacks (J.C. Horn and Mike Jackson).

Sam LaPorta · TE, DET

↑ Also gets a boost in a great matchup setup against a Panthers secondary missing two starting corners.

Jared Goff · QB, DET

↑ Considered a fantastic play given the matchup with Carolina's depleted secondary.

Rico Dowdle · RB, PIT

↓ Did not practice Monday ahead of Thursday's game against the Browns, clouding his availability.

Baker Mayfield · QB, TB

→ Not going on IR; expected to miss less than four games, with Jalen Daniels starting this week against the Packers.

Brian Thomas · WR, JAX

↓ Played only 23 snaps and 13 routes against the Patriots despite no game-script excuse; averaging 5.3 fantasy points per game and currently unplayable, though worth holding for now given the November 10 trade deadline.

Chris Godwin · WR, TB

↓ Currently WR52 and considered more replaceable than Egbuka this week.

Tyler Allgeier · RB, ARI

↓ Only had two rushing attempts as Love took over; expected to be on the losing side of a 60-35 split similar to last year, limiting his flex value.

Emanuel Wilson · RB, SEA

→ Got nine carries to Price's five last week and gained comparable yardage; seen as a capable option in the muddled backfield.

Odell Beckham · WR, NYG

→ Released by the Giants, but his absence likely won't boost anyone given the existing three-man rotation of Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields, and Darius Slayton/Darnell Mooney.

Marcus Mariota · QB, WAS

→ Should be held onto as handcuff insurance for Jayden Daniels given his injury-prone history.

Case Keenum · QB, CHI

→ Led the Bears to a Monday Night win over the Eagles, but Ben Johnson won't commit to him starting again this week.

Tyson Bagent · QB, CHI

↑ Had less practice time than Keenum last week but hosts believe he'll likely get the start against the Jets this week.

Tyler Higbee · TE, LAR

↑ Got a ton of targets and produced well on Sunday Night Football; could see another big week especially if Puka Nacua remains out.

Cody White · WR, LV

↓ Has three catches for three touchdowns this season but only 16% of offensive snaps; not worth pickup outside the deepest leagues.

Ray Hamilton · TE

↑ Tucker Hurst (likely referring to TE) stands to benefit once Mayfield returns since Mayfield has shown willingness to target him.
