Week 3 Overreactions, Injury Fallout & Week 4 Waiver Wire Targets

Listen to the episode ↗

Kendall and Pete break down a brutal Week 3 injury slate (Achane's torn ACL, Baker Mayfield's dislocated thumb, Breece Hall's thigh, Mike Evans' rib/oblique) before running through overreactions on hot starts like JSN, Derrick Henry, Brock Purdy and Jeremiah Love. Scott Turner joins for an 'emergency press conference' on JJ McCarthy's trade to the Giants and struggling QBs Drake May and Justin Herbert, and the show closes with detailed Week 4 waiver wire targets at every position.

This Overreaction Monday episode of the Fantasy Life Show tackles a brutal week three: a season-ending ACL tear for Devon Achane, injury scares for Baker Mayfield, Breece Hall, Mike Evans and Jalen Coker, plus J.J. McCarthy's surprise trade to the Giants. Kendall and Pete pair the injury fallout with historic-pace performances from JSN and Derrick Henry, then bring in Scott Turner for a quarterback-carousel deep dive before closing with detailed FAAB-priority waiver wire targets for week four.

The arguments

Devon Achane's ACL tear turns Miami's backfield into forced-start territory, not a bench candidate. Pete argues that even though this is now the worst skill-position group in football, fantasy is forward-looking, and any back projecting 10+ touches deserves a roster spot regardless of the offense around him. Both hosts agree Malik Willis becoming more of a runner is plausible but unproven, and neither is willing to trust him as a season-long asset yet.

Baker Mayfield's dislocated thumb (2-4 weeks) is a near-total offensive shutdown for Tampa. Kendall and Pete agree the backup situation (undrafted Jalen Daniels over Jake Browning) is a red flag for a supposed playoff team, and both see this as bad news across the board for Egbuka, Godwin and Otten with no silver lining beyond a possible rushing-scheme wrinkle.

Mike Evans' pattern of recurring, not-individually-severe injuries is now a real concern, but Pete still expects him to play through it. Pete frames Evans as chronically dinged-up rather than facing one catastrophic issue, while Kendall widens the lens to call for "bubble-wrapping" every remaining healthy 49ers skill player given the team's injury rate this season.

Brock Purdy is performing at a top-five, arguably top-three, fantasy quarterback level and should never be drafted as a value pick again. Both hosts cite his completion rate, passing pace toward the single-season touchdown record, and added rushing production, with Pete noting that CMC's declining rushing role may actually be funneling more passing volume to Purdy going forward.

Jeremiah Love has effectively won the Cardinals backfield after one dominant week three usage spike. Kendall points to the jump from a 43% to 63% snap share and a 91 utilization score as evidence the timeline for Love becoming the lead back moved up dramatically; both hosts see this as validation for anyone who drafted him as a mid-to-late third-round dice roll, while also using it to highlight how poorly both Patriots backs (Henderson and Stevenson) have played given the same offensive line.

Kenyon Sadiq's tight end four finish is a real breakout signal, not a one-week aberration, but his floor is still Jets-offense dependent. Kendall calls him a bye-week/injury-fill streamer for now given a 57% route share, while Pete argues the traits (elite athleticism, red-zone and YAC ability) make him worth rostering purely to keep him off an opponent's roster, even if he isn't a weekly must-start yet.

Scott Turner pushes back on panic around Drake May and the Chargers' 0-3 start, but confirms the Chargers are likely staring down 0-7. Turner attributes May's poor play to pressing and bad decision-making rather than a talent collapse and expects continued starts; on the Chargers, he cites the five-turnover, ten-penalty Buffalo loss as proof the roster and coaching issues run deep, with no remaining schedule advantage before November.

What it means for your roster

  • Claim Ollie Gordon and Jalen Wright now — Pete expects Gordon to lead the backfield for 10+ touches a game even in a bad offense; treat him as a flex-caliber play in deeper leagues, not just a bench stash.
  • Prioritize Alvin Kamara over Kendra Miller if Travis Etienne misses time — Kamara held the clear rushing and goal-line role (100% of two-minute snaps) even before the injury news broke live on the show.
  • Add Kenyon Sadiq regardless of your tight end need, per Pete, simply to deny him to an opponent — but don't start him over Kittle or Schultz-caliber options unless you're desperate.
  • Braylon Allen is the priority week four handcuff if Breece Hall (thigh, week-to-week per Schefter/Rappaport) sits; Keaton Mitchell is the higher-upside speculative stash given his explosiveness and known coaching-staff interest.
  • Stream Geno Smith against the Bears — both hosts rank him among their top quarterback plays for the week given the Garrett Wilson/Sadiq connection, independent of Sadiq's own tight end streaming case.
  • If you rostered Derrick Henry or JSN, hold — don't shop them in panic trades; the hosts frame both as locked into elite, unshakeable roles (goal-line monopoly for Henry, target monopoly for JSN) that justify treating them as top-three assets at their positions going forward.
“Bubble wrap Debo Samuel, bubble wrap George Pickens or George Kittle, bubble wrap CMC.” — Pete

Players in this episode

Jaxon Smith-Njigba · WR, SEA

↑ On pace to shatter single-season WR reception, yardage and TD records; hosts call him a clear top-3 fantasy asset alongside Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs.

Derrick Henry · RB, BAL

↑ On pace to break the single-season rushing TD record; hosts say he should be drafted as a late-first-round pick, not mid-second, given his goal-line monopoly.

De'Von Achane · RB, MIA

↓ Torn ACL ends his season, gutting an already thin Dolphins skill group; hosts pivot to next-man-up waiver options.

Drake Maye · QB, NE

↓ Struggling with turnovers and pressing under pressure, but Scott Turner says a QB change isn't warranted given his talent and 2024 MVP-caliber flashes.

Justin Jefferson · WR, MIN

→ Ankle injury, could have returned to the game per Kevin O'Connell; hosts remain nervous about the Vikings offense overall despite good injury news.

Jeremiyah Love · RB, ARI

↑ Became the clear bell-cow back in Week 3 with 63% snap share and 78% rush share over Tyler Allgeier, validating his late-third-round draft cost.

Brock Bowers · TE, LV

↑ Returned strong with 13 targets and a goal-line TD, reinforcing hosts' belief he'll challenge Trey McBride for the top TE spot all season.

Breece Hall · RB, NYJ

↓ Thigh injury with no clear update until Wednesday; reports suggest it could be a multi-week/month issue, elevating Braylon Allen and Keaton Mitchell.

Justin Herbert · QB, LAC

↓ Turner says Herbert is talented but has a career-long pattern of trying to force big plays instead of taking what's given, worsening negative plays.

Brock Purdy · QB, SF

↑ MVP-caliber start (72.3% completion, 9 TD-1 INT, plus rushing production); hosts argue he should be drafted as a top-6 QB next year if health holds.

Mike Evans · WR, SF

→ Left with rib/oblique injury after already dealing with a hamstring; hosts worry about recurring durability issues but think he'll play through it if not severe.

Baker Mayfield · QB, TB

↓ Dislocated thumb expected to sideline him 2-4 weeks, with undrafted Jalen Daniels next up, tanking the whole Bucs offense's value.

Tyler Allgeier · RB, ARI

↓ Lost the lead role to Jeremiah Love in Week 3 after leading snaps early in the season.

Kenyon Sadiq · TE, NYJ

↑ TE4 finish on 13 targets and a highlight TD; athletic marvel comparison to Vernon Davis, considered the top streaming/waiver TE add even with a lower floor.

Alvin Kamara · RB, NO

↑ Preferred back to add after Travis Etienne's hamstring injury news broke live on air; trusted in pass-catching and goal-line role over Kendre Miller.

Malik Willis · QB, MIA

↓ Hosts skeptical he'll suddenly run more just because Achane is out; still prefer other streaming options over him.

Jalen Coker · WR, CAR

→ Quad injury deemed mild by player himself; questionable for Week 4 but hosts feel they 'dodged a bullet.'

Geno Smith · QB, NYJ

↑ Strong Week 3 performance without AD Mitchell; favorable upcoming schedule (Bears, Browns, Dolphins) makes him a streaming target.

J.J. McCarthy · QB, MIN

→ Traded from Vikings to Giants for a 2027 fifth-round pick; Scott Turner says he could see the field if Jameis Winston struggles further, calling the Giants move a bit of a panic deal.

Kirk Cousins · QB, LV

→ Playing efficient, mistake-free football (3 TD, 0 INT) that's propping up Raiders' skill players even as hosts await a Shedeur/Fernando Mendoza-type change of pace.

Ollie Gordon · RB, MIA

↑ Expected to lead the Dolphins backfield after Achane's injury and Jalen Wright's foot issue, projected for 10+ touches with flex-worthy upside.
