TNF Recap, Injury Updates + Week 3 Preview

Listen to the episode ↗

Matthew Berry brings on Stephania Bell to recap Thursday Night Football and run through a wave of Week 3 injury news (Jadarian Price, Saquon Barkley, Puka Nacua, DJ Moore, Zay Flowers), then Dan Graziano joins to break down backup quarterback situations, backfield committees and target-share shifts across Chicago, Washington, New York (Giants), Pittsburgh, Indianapolis and Arizona. The central argument is that injuries and backup QB play are creating streaming/waiver opportunities while several bell-cow players (Puka Nacua, Marvin Harrison Jr., Jaden Daniels) carry real risk heading into Week 3.

This episode covers Thursday Night Football fallout and Week 3 injury news, built around two guest segments: Stefania Bell on injury designations and Dan Graziano on backfield and depth-chart intel. The throughline is that several banged-up situations (Puka Nakua, Saquon Barkley, Jaden Daniels, Rico Dowdle) and messy backup quarterback scenarios (Bears, Giants, Seahawks) are creating real short-term start/sit and waiver decisions heading into Week 3.

The arguments

Michael Penix Jr.'s return unlocked Drake London as a true fantasy centerpiece. Stefania Bell explained Penix's rehab (a quad tendon graft plus a knee reinforcement procedure) as more complex than a standard ACL recovery, which is why he looked understandably rusty but still functional. Berry emphasized the on-field result regardless of process: London drew a 43.5% target share and was the only Falcons player above 13%, while Kyle Pitts was shut out of the game plan entirely.

Kyle Pitts and Brian Robinson are both currently unstartable despite touches/opportunity. Berry said Pitts is droppable-adjacent — not cut, but bench him until he shows something — since Penix looked only at London. On Robinson, Berry noted he's quietly hit his rushing yardage prop three straight weeks on ~10 touches a game, calling it a mild betting angle, but not fantasy-relevant enough to complain about given Bijan Robinson's night.

Green Bay's offense is passable for its receivers but not for the run game. Berry and Bell agreed Jordan Love had a good day and both Christian Watson and Matthew Golden are trustworthy, with Bell singling out Watson as her most trusted piece of that passing attack. Bell was lower on Tucker Kraft short-term — she sat him in DFS despite eight targets, wanting to see the offense clarify first — while Berry was fully bought into Golden. Both agreed no Packers running back is startable right now given the offensive line and game script.

Puka Nakua's injury is part of a pre-existing pattern, and Bell is not trading him despite acknowledging real risk. Bell traced the issue back to a psoas/hip flexor injury that started in an August 11 joint practice with the Cowboys, kept him out of practice for roughly three weeks, and flared up again in the Australia game; she flagged concern that mismanagement could risk a compensatory injury or core muscle repair. Bell said she personally wouldn't trade him because she believes the payoff returns once he's back, though she explicitly said she wouldn't blame anyone who sold given the risk — Berry noted this contradicts his own instinct to fade Puka for Chase in drafts, which he said preemptively (not as a victory lap).

Jaden Daniels avoiding IR is a meaningfully positive signal, per Schefter/Rapoport reporting Berry read live and Graziano confirmed. Graziano said the team's decision not to pursue surgery (opting for rest/rehab) suggests specialists felt the shoulder could stabilize without intervention, and since IR requires a four-game minimum, the team believes he can return sooner than that. Both agreed the risk of recurrence remains real long-term, but for fantasy purposes this is good news short-term.

Backup quarterback situations across the NFC are murky, but largely low-stakes for skill players. Graziano expects Case Keenum over Tyson Bagent for Chicago (Bagent didn't practice in concussion protocol) and said it barely changes evaluations since the Bears' implied team total (18.5, fourth-lowest in Week 3) suggests a stream-your-defense-against-them spot. He also said Sam Darnold is trending toward playing for Seattle after being elevated to full practice, and Berry flagged Darnold as a viable streamer given the shortage of other startable QBs (Dart, Daniels, Williams all out).

Injury-driven target/role changes are producing clear waiver priorities: Josh Downs, Isaiah Likely, and Jalen Warren. Graziano said Alec Pierce's absence pushed Josh Downs to a 36% target share and over 40% of routes run from the perimeter, and expects Downs, Tyler Warren, and Jonathan Taylor to dominate Indy's offense going forward. Separately, he noted Isaiah Likely had a 33% target share with Jameis Winston at QB last week (a real, repeatable connection with Jackson Dart out for the year), and that Jalen Warren is the primary beneficiary if Rico Dowdle (toe, DNP) can't go Sunday.

What it means for your roster

  • Start Drake London confidently and bench Kyle Pitts until he shows real target share; Pitts is a hold, not a drop, per Berry.
  • Sit Green Bay running backs entirely; trust Christian Watson and Matthew Golden as WR plays, but stay cautious on Tucker Kraft in DFS/close lineup decisions until the offense stabilizes.
  • Do not panic-trade Puka Nakua — Bell's stance is hold for the eventual payoff, though she validates trading him if you want to de-risk given the psoas injury history.
  • Add Tank Bigsby now as direct Saquon Barkley insurance; Berry reiterated this is a mandatory 100%-rostered handcuff regardless of Barkley's stinger status.
  • Prioritize waiver claims on Josh Downs (mid-WR3/high-WR2 value) and Isaiah Likely (top-6 TE) this week, and grab Jalen Warren if Rico Dowdle's toe injury keeps him out of practice again.
  • Sam Darnold is a viable streaming QB option this week given the QB shortage around the league (Dart, Daniels, Williams all sidelined), if Seattle confirms he starts over Drew Lock.

Players in this episode

Bijan Robinson · RB, ATL

↑ Had a dominant performance on Thursday night; hosts say no one with Bijan should complain about anything.

Puka Nacua · WR, LAR

↓ Trending toward missing another game with a psoas/groin-area injury that Rams are being cautious with to avoid a season-ending core muscle issue; hosts are not looking to trade him despite the risk.

Saquon Barkley · RB, PHI

↑ Dealing with a stinger from last week but expected to play Monday night and play well; ranked RB10.

Drake London · WR, ATL

↑ Commanded a massive 43.5% target share from Michael Penix Jr. in the TNF opener.

Jayden Daniels · QB, WAS

↑ Will not be placed on IR after shoulder imaging; considered week-to-week with rehab plan instead of surgery, a positive sign for a quicker return.

Malik Nabers · WR, NYG

→ Dealing with a minor injury (full practice) but downgraded due to Jameis Winston at QB; ranked as a low-end WR2.

Cam Skattebo · RB, NYG

→ Head of a running back committee, getting touches but shared workload; ranked as a low-end RB2/high-end flex.

Zay Flowers · WR, BAL

↓ Hasn't practiced this week ahead of a road trip to Brazil; Bell leans toward him being inactive and expects another week out.

DJ Moore · WR, BUF

→ Dealing with an AC joint sprain, didn't practice Thursday but felt great Wednesday; expected to play with risk of aggravation.

Tyler Warren · TE, IND

↑ Valued as a do-everything player including short-yardage/goal-line work, ranked a top-six tight end play this week.

Jaylen Warren · RB, PIT

↑ Would be the primary beneficiary of a near full-time role if Rico Dowdle can't play; limited practice due to a shoulder issue but expected to be fine.

Jadarian Price · RB, SEA

→ Expected to play through a chest/shoulder injury and remain the early-down/passing-down back in a shared Seahawks backfield, but game-script risk in a blowout could limit him; ranked as a low-end flex.

Mike Evans · WR, SF

↑ No injury concern at all; ranked a top-20 play in a good matchup for San Francisco... referenced as facing the 49ers.

Christian Watson · WR, GB

↑ Stephania Bell trusts him most in the Packers passing game because they consistently look for him deep.

Tucker Kraft · TE, GB

→ Got eight targets but didn't produce in the box score; Bell sat him in DFS due to uncertainty about the offense, though she believes it's matchup/scheme related, not injury recovery.

Rico Dowdle · RB, PIT

↓ Dealing with a toe injury and hasn't practiced, putting his Sunday status in doubt.

Kyle Pitts · TE, ATL

↓ Was shut out of the passing game as Penix looked almost exclusively to Drake London; hosts say he's unstartable until he shows more involvement.

Jordan Love · QB, GB

→ Threw 53 times and had a good fantasy day despite Green Bay's struggling offensive line.

Marvin Harrison · WR, ARI

↓ Tied for fifth on the Cardinals in targets with Trey Benson through two games, not getting open enough, and currently unstartable, though hosts advise patience rather than selling low.

Brian Robinson · RB, ATL

↑ Quietly hit his rushing yardage prop for a third straight week with about 10 touches per game, seen as a good bet going forward.

Sam Darnold · QB, SEA

↑ Made strong practice progress and is 'striving' to play Sunday; if cleared, considered an interesting streaming option against Washington.

Alec Pierce · WR, IND

↓ Injury removes the Colts' deep-threat element; Darius Slayton expected to try to fill that role but isn't a one-for-one replacement.

Isaiah Likely · TE, NYG

↑ Had a team-high 33% target share with Winston at QB last week, viewed as a legitimate fantasy piece tied to Winston's usage.

Josh Downs · WR, IND

↑ Saw a 36% target share and over 40% of perimeter routes after Alec Pierce's injury; considered a rock-solid WR3 with WR2 upside going forward.

Matthew Golden · WR, GB

↑ Hosts say he looks legit and has been productive in the Packers passing attack.

Michael Penix · QB, ATL

↑ Returned from a complex quad-tendon ACL reconstruction and looked better than expected in his first game back, heavily targeting Drake London.

Jameis Winston · QB, NYG

→ Struggled badly in relief of Jackson Dart, but that game plan was tailored for Dart; expected to perform better this week as the full-time starter with a game plan built around him.

Tyson Bagent · QB, CHI

→ In concussion protocol and did not practice; Case Keenum considered the most likely starter Monday night over him.
