Week 5 Fantasy Football D/ST & Kicker Rankings: Top Streamers & Stashes

Listen to the episode ↗

Theo Gremminger breaks down Week 5 D/ST streaming options, highlighting Jacksonville as the top set-and-forget play against a depleted Philadelphia Eagles team, while also flagging Minnesota, Cincinnati, Chicago, and Denver as strong matchup-based plays. He closes with kicker pickups, touting Dominic Zavada and Matt Gay as waiver adds and recapping success with earlier targets like Will Reichard and Spencer Schrader.

# Week 5 D/ST & Kicker Rankings: Deep Dive

This episode is Theo Gremminger's weekly streaming guide for defense and kicker, built around the premise that correctly streaming these positions can swing a matchup by 7-10 points. He runs through the top available defenses by matchup quality, flags a couple of elite rostered defenses facing tough tests, highlights stash candidates for Week 6, and closes with a kicker-streaming section built around opportunity for long field goals.

The arguments

Jacksonville is the top available defensive pickup in any league where it's sitting on waivers. Gremminger argues the Jaguars are big favorites over a Philadelphia team that is "decimated" at skill positions — missing DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert, Saquon Barkley, and now Tank Bigsby, with Lane Johnson retired and Jalen Hurts coming off a sub-100-yard passing game. He calls this as close to a set-it-and-forget-it spot as exists this week.

Minnesota is a strong hold against New Orleans, while Seattle is a risky one against San Francisco. Gremminger notes Brian Flores' defense has been lights-out and that Atlanta already exposed Saints weaknesses last week, making Minnesota a confident stream. Seattle, by contrast, faces a 49ers offense with an elite line and a dialed-in Brock Purdy, so he frames using Seattle as hoping for a game script rather than a clean matchup.

Chicago's defense deserves a statistical reset, not a dismissal based on its Week 1 numbers. Gremminger pushes back on fantasy managers who wrote off the Bears after Carolina torched them in Week 1, pointing out Chicago is third in total defense and has allowed its fewest points over a three-game stretch since 2012. He adds that Ben Johnson's run-heavy offense controls time of possession, which keeps the Bears' defense fresh and off the field in the fourth quarter, setting up well against a Green Bay offensive line that's still struggled to protect the passer and run the ball.

Miami and Cincinnati are the preferred attack targets for managers needing a true streamer. Gremminger reiterates a season-long theme of rostering teams against Miami, since without De'Von Achane the Dolphins lean on only Ollie Gordon and Malik Washington for offense. He pairs that with Cincinnati, arguing their Week 1-2 form (vs. Tampa Bay and Houston) was more representative of their pass-rush ability than their quieter middle two weeks, and this week's Miami matchup is a chance to return to that elite level.

Cleveland and the Jets present a legitimate "chase the low-scoring game" stream, with Cleveland the preferred side. Gremminger cites Cleveland's No. 1 rate of man-to-man coverage, playmakers in Myles Garrett, Jared Verse-type pass rush pieces, and the development of Carson Schwesinger and Mason Graham, plus praise for defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg from Cleveland beat reporters. He frames the Jets as live only if seeking the lowest implied team total (sub-20), since their offense was shut out by Chicago, but cautions that was partly a function of play volume, not just Jets ineptitude.

Houston is a buy-low stream after a disappointing start. Gremminger admits he was wrong on his preseason excitement for the Texans defense, who are 0-4 and were just "boat raced" by Dallas, but argues this is a get-right spot against a Tennessee offense carrying the lowest implied team total on the board (some books under 16).

The Giants and Washington hinge on Jaden Daniels' injury status, with Dallas as a lower-confidence attack option. Gremminger says if Daniels sits, the Giants (3-1, with a recent pick-six) become a strong stream against Jacoby Brissett or Kellen Mond, but if Daniels plays, confidence drops; in turnover-heavy leagues, Washington is also live because of Jameis Winston's interception risk. Separately, he floats Dallas against a reeling Tampa Bay team, while acknowledging it's hard to fully trust the Cowboys defense this season.

What it means for your roster

  • Priority wire add: Jacksonville, if somehow available — treat as a top-end claim this week against Philadelphia's banged-up offense.
  • Hold with confidence: Minnesota and Chicago as rostered defenses; don't bench Chicago based on early-season numbers, per Gremminger's reframe.
  • Consider benching: Seattle this week unless desperate — the 49ers matchup is unfavorable even for a "stud" defense.
  • Streaming pool this week: Miami's opponent (Cincinnati) and Cleveland are the top plays; Jets are only in play if you're specifically chasing a low-scoring game script.
  • Monitor injury news: Check Jaden Daniels' status before locking lineups — his absence makes the Giants a strong streamer; his presence flips preference toward caution or Washington in turnover-heavy formats.
  • Week 6 stash targets (cost nothing): New England (vs. Jets), Kansas City (vs. Chargers, post-bye), and Indianapolis (vs. Titans) are the recommended stashes if roster space allows.
  • Kicker wire moves: Prioritize Spencer Schrader if still available; otherwise target Dominic Zavada (Giants rookie, 2-for-2 from 50+ last two weeks, favorable Washington matchup) or Matt Gay (Raiders, hot streak) for streaming, especially in leagues with fractional/distance-based scoring. Keep an eye on Nick Folk in Atlanta as a bounce-back streaming add.
“This is the fewest points allowed over a three-game stretch for the Chicago Bears defense since 2012.” — Theo Gremminger

Players in this episode

Jayden Daniels · QB, WAS

→ Latest reports suggest he will play this week despite earlier concerns about soreness/effectiveness, which affects whether to stream the Giants defense.

Jake Bates · K, DET

↑ Another preseason kicker target who had a really good week.

Will Reichard · K, MIN

↑ Preseason target touted as a 'discount Brandon Aubrey' who scored 19 points last week; recommended to use him all year.

Matt Gay · K, LV

↑ On a heater with the Raiders' offense moving well; tricky matchup against New England could still mean more field goal chances.

Nick Folk · K, ATL

↑ Season stats look bad from Atlanta's slow start, but offense has picked up with Michael Penix Jr., Bijan Robinson, and Drake London, creating more field goal opportunities.

Dominic Zvada · K, NYG

↑ Rookie kicker on a heater, going 2-for-2 from 50+ yards last week and perfect the week before; trusted by the Giants for long attempts, faces a Washington defense that allows 30+ points per game.

Spencer Shrader · K, IND

↑ Preseason/in-season target who scored 16 points last week; preferred over other streaming kicker options if still available.

Jacksonville Jaguars · DEF, JAX

↑ Elite defense with a top matchup this week as a big favorite over a decimated Philadelphia Eagles team; the number one streaming pickup available.

Dallas Cowboys · DEF, DAL

→ In consideration this week against a reeling Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense with a low implied team total; coming off a big win.

Cleveland Browns · DEF, CLE

↑ Highest rate of man-to-man coverage in the league, strong pass rush (Jared Verse, Myles Garrett, Mason Graham), good streaming option in a low-scoring projected game vs. the Jets.

Chicago Bears · DEF, CHI

↑ Number three in total defense, allowing their fewest points over a 3-game stretch since 2012; good matchup against a Green Bay offensive line that's struggled.

Miami Dolphins · DEF, MIA

↓ Continues to be a target for opposing streamers; without Devon Achane, only Ollie Gordon and Malik Washington are reliable skill players.

Minnesota Vikings · DEF, MIN

↑ In a great matchup against a New Orleans offense that Atlanta exposed last week; Brian Flores' defense has been lights out this season.

New England Patriots · DEF, NE

→ Likely available on waivers after getting beaten by Jacksonville and Buffalo; could be a good stash for a Week 6 matchup against the Jets.

New York Giants · DEF, NYG

→ 3-1 defense that forced turnovers against Jacoby Brissett including a pick-six; a strong play if Jayden Daniels sits for Washington, though latest reports suggest he'll play.

New York Jets · DEF, NYJ

→ Viable streamer against Cleveland with a low implied team total projected (sub-20), could be part of a low-scoring game.

Philadelphia Eagles · DEF, PHI

↓ Reeling offense missing Devonta Smith, Dallas Goedert, Saquon Barkley, and Tank Bigsby, with Jalen Hurts under 100 passing yards last week; one of the lowest implied team totals this week.

Seattle Seahawks · DEF, SEA

↓ Tough matchup against an elite San Francisco 49ers offense with Brock Purdy dialed in and a strong O-line; hard to trust as a streamer this week.

Denver Broncos · DEF, DEN

→ Less dominant than last year due to injuries, but a great matchup against a struggling LA Chargers team.

Cincinnati Bengals · DEF, CIN

↑ One of the best streamers this week with a chance to exploit Miami's struggling offense, similar to their big Weeks 1-2 performances.

Houston Texans · DEF, HOU

↑ Preseason favorite that disappointed at 0-4, but big favorites this week against a low-scoring Tennessee Titans offense, a get-right spot.

Indianapolis Colts · DEF, IND

↑ Just beat up Washington in London and face Tennessee in Week 6, making them a good free stash.
