Week 5 Waiver Wire: MUST-ADD Pickups & Deep Sleepers

Listen to the episode ↗

Theo Gremminger breaks down Week 5 waiver wire targets following Saquon Barkley's hamstring injury, major QB performances from CJ Stroud, Kirk Cousins and others, and a deep dive into RB, WR and TE depth pieces created by injuries across the league. He stresses staying ahead of bye weeks (Panthers/Chiefs this week, four teams each in Weeks 6-7) and prioritizing handcuffs and speculative adds like Tyreek Hill before his potential Chiefs reunion.

This Week 5 waiver wire show from Theo Gremminger covers the fallout from the Saquon Barkley hamstring injury, a wave of quarterback streaming options tied to injuries and hot stretches, and a deep running back and wide receiver pool shaped by an unusually rough bye-week stretch coming in Weeks 6-7. The through-line argument is that there's no single league-winning pickup available this week, so managers should focus on cheap speculative adds, handcuffs, and bye-week preparation rather than chasing one big name.

The arguments

Will Shipley is the top priority running back add, even ahead of fixing Tank Bigsby's own murky status. Gremminger notes Bigsby is likely already rostered in competitive leagues after being pushed all summer as Barkley's handcuff, but Bigsby himself left Sunday's game with an abdomen issue and was splitting time with Shipley. He argues Shipley's Clemson receiving pedigree and familiarity with Nick Sirianni make him valuable regardless of Bigsby's health, especially since Jacksonville's run defense is elite but has been gashed by backs catching passes (the Chase Brown game as the comp).

CJ Stroud has moved from streamer to must-roster after his best game of the season. Stroud threw for 347 yards and two touchdowns with Nico Collins back and remains without an interception on the year, ranking fifth in passing yards. Gremminger credits Houston's pass-heavy rate (helped by a disappointing David Montgomery) and says this isn't likely a one-week blip.

Kirk Cousins is a priority add in Superflex/deep leagues, but his schedule is a real concern. He threw for 365 yards and two scores against Kansas City in Clint Kubiak's offense, and Gremminger praises Kubiak's play-calling and usage of Brock Bowers and Gentey. However, he flags a brutal upcoming stretch (at New England, Buffalo, Rams, at Jets) and suggests stashing Fernando Mendoza as a bench piece in case Cousins struggles enough to lose the job.

Jacoby Brissett is back on the streaming radar purely because of matchup, not performance. Brissett was ugly against the Giants (166 yards, three picks), but Detroit's defense has been repeatedly shredded (Geno Smith, Bryce Young games cited), and Arizona's skill talent (Michael Wilson, Trey McBride, Marvin Harrison Jr., Jeremiah Love) gives Brissett a get-right spot.

Tyreek Hill is a pure speculative stash, not a real roster lock yet. Gremminger cites beat reporting that Hill's agents have talked to the Chiefs about a reunion and compares it to the Kareem Hunt reunion, but stresses this is a dollar-or-zero speculative add given Kansas City's receiver injuries (Rashee Rice, Tyquan Thornton) also opened a door for rookies Jalen Royals and Xavier Legette (referred to as Cyrus Allen in transcript) as more realistic plays.

Bye-week preparation matters more than usual this year because Weeks 6 and 7 each have four teams off simultaneously. With only Carolina and Kansas City on bye in Week 5, Gremminger argues managers should use this lighter week to get ahead of Week 6 (Bengals, Lions, Dolphins, Vikings) and Week 7 (Bills, Jaguars, Chargers, Commanders) before FAAB bidding wars intensify.

Roman Wilson's usage is legitimately sustainable, not touchdown-dependent luck. Despite skepticism from other analysts, Gremminger highlights Wilson's bizarre but consistent six targets in four straight games, back-to-back touchdown games, and Michael Pittman's struggles as reasons to trust the role in deep and WR-heavy formats.

What it means for your roster

  • Add Will Shipley immediately in all formats regardless of whether you roster Bigsby; prioritize Bigsby too if he's somehow still available.
  • Roster CJ Stroud now, especially for bye-week streaming — he's graduated from speculative to priority add.
  • Add Kirk Cousins in Superflex/deep leagues, but stash Fernando Mendoza as insurance given the brutal upcoming schedule.
  • Use Jacoby Brissett as a one-week streamer against Detroit despite his poor Week 4 line; don't commit long-term.
  • Grab Tyreek Hill for minimal FAAB (a dollar or zero) as a pure lottery ticket, prioritizing Jalen Royals or the rookie Chiefs WR as the more realistic real-usage add this week.
  • Target Dante Myers and Mike Gesicki as Bengals contingency plays if Ja'Marr Chase and/or Tee Higgins sit out — both become viable streamers against Miami.
  • Use Week 5's light bye slate (only Panthers/Chiefs) to get ahead of Weeks 6-7, cleaning up bench spots now before four-team bye weeks spike FAAB competition.

Players in this episode

Lamar Jackson · QB, BAL

↓ Left the game in a boot, injury severity unclear but doesn't seem severe; monitor through the week.

Saquon Barkley · RB, PHI

↓ Left the game with a hamstring injury that didn't look great; hamstring re-aggravation risk means his backfield could open up for others.

Jayden Daniels · QB, WAS

↑ Rookie QB had 55 rush yards on 8 carries plus 148 passing yards; has a top-20 QB upside vs Dallas and should be added in superflex.

Jakobi Meyers · WR, JAX

↑ 7 catches for 82 yards on 9 targets; prime add if Ja'Marr Chase and/or Tee Higgins miss time, with a great Week 5 matchup vs Miami.

C.J. Stroud · QB, HOU

↑ 347 yards, two TDs, no INTs on the season, now 5th in passing yards; top priority waiver QB add given Houston's pass-heavy offense.

Fernando Mendoza · QB, LV

→ Stash behind Cousins in case Cousins struggles over several games and gets benched.

Xavier Worthy · WR, KC

↑ (Referenced as 'Cyrus Allen'/Chiefs rookie WR) Expected to get a big opportunity with Rashee Rice injured and Tyquan Thornton also hurt; top add among Chiefs WRs.

Tyreek Hill · WR

↑ Reports indicate his agents have talked to the Chiefs about a reunion; cheap speculative add given the huge fantasy upside if he signs and reconnects with Mahomes.

Tank Bigsby · RB, PHI

↑ Already widely rostered as Barkley's primary handcuff but also left the game with an abdomen issue; add immediately if available.

Emanuel Wilson · RB, SEA

↑ 21 carries for 81 yards and a TD plus 3 catches for 39 yards filling in for the injured Jadarian Price; must be rostered everywhere until Jacoby Charbonnet returns.

Najee Harris · RB, NYG

→ Nine carries in back-to-back games; would see 15 touches a game if Cam Skattebo misses time, so should be rostered as insurance.

Kaleb Johnson · RB, GB

↑ 8 carries for 42 yards with Chris Brooks hurt; has the most upside in the Packers backfield and worth a deep-league add.

Jaylen Wright · RB, MIA

→ Was outproduced by Ollie Gordon but still worth rostering to monitor role changes in Miami's backfield.

Aaron Rodgers · QB, PIT

↑ Over 290 passing yards and six TDs combined over his last two games; should be rostered and streamed in NFFC/FFPC formats.

Jacoby Brissett · QB, ARI

→ Struggled with 166 yards and 3 INTs vs the Giants, but gets a plus matchup vs a soft Detroit defense and is back on the streaming radar.

Keon Coleman · WR, BUF

↑ 6 catches for 116 yards and a TD when DJ Moore left the game; next man in if Moore misses time, must-add in deeper formats.

Joe Mixon · RB

→ Free agent who visited Seattle; speculative cheap add given Seattle's backfield uncertainty.

Michael Penix · QB, ATL

↑ Promising play with heavy usage of London and Bijan Robinson makes him a superflex starter.

Kirk Cousins · QB, LV

↑ 365 yards, two TDs vs Kansas City, 11 TD passes on the season, thriving in Clint Kubiak's offense; must-add despite a tougher upcoming schedule.

Mike Gesicki · TE, CIN

↑ Averaging 11.1 PPG and could see a bigger role vs his former team Miami if Chase or Higgins miss time.

Michael Mayer · TE, LV

↑ 8 catches for 82 yards and a TD on 10 targets after Jalen Naylor's injury; outproducing Brock Bowers recently and valuable as his backup/insurance.

Tyson Bagent · QB, CHI

↑ 268 passing yards with a run-heavy Bears offense; streaming option this week vs Green Bay while Caleb Williams is out.

Austin Ekeler · RB, WAS

↑ Returned from a shoulder injury with 4 carries for 29 yards and 2 targets; could overtake a struggling Jaylen Warren/Krosky-Meritt in a two-man backfield.

Tyler Higbee · TE, LAR

↑ 13 catches on 17 targets over last two games with Terrence Ferguson on IR; strong tight end premium performer.

Will Shipley · RB, PHI

↑ Priority add even if you already have Bigsby, since Bigsby also left the game; strong receiving prospect who could see work vs Jacksonville's pass-funnel run defense.

Roman Wilson · WR, PIT

↑ 14 catches, 2 TDs, exactly six targets in four straight games; usage is legitimate with Aaron Rodgers throwing often, should be rostered in WR-heavy formats.

Tyler Huntley · QB, BAL

↑ Must-add in all superflex leagues as Lamar Jackson's handcuff given his rushing ability and the elite Flowers/Henry weapons around him.
